But for all the hearsay, no one has ever provided satisfactory proof of the existence of the animal known as Sasquatch, or Bigfoot. The closest anyone ever came was in 1967, when a Sasquatch enthusiast named Roger Patterson and an outdoorsman named Robert Gimilin shot a short film clip that is now world-famous. The clip appears to show a creature more than 2 metres tall, calmly walking upright, away from the camera across a dry creek bed. Patterson claimed until his dying day in 1972 that the film was authentic, as Gimlin insists even now. Thousands of Bigfoot believers agree! Now comes the Wallace family's "confession" and display of fake feet allegedly used by Ray Wallace to hoax the 1958 Bluff Creek discovery of large tracks, which led to the media naming of “Bigfoot.” The confession is all over the papers and airwaves. Never mind that the original Jerry Crew cast doesn’t match the Wallace fake foot. Never mind that we all knew Wallace was a prankster. Never mind that Wallace wasn’t able to put one over on any of us in 44 years. The media is constructing a new world of Bigfoot myth making in December 2002. We would be foolish to ignore that this is, however, for the moment, a media-driven traumatic event to serious Bigfoot studies. It began with an obituary and a reporter's talk with a grieving family. What happened next was a flood of badly written items, flowing forth faster than the speed of your cable modem. The original Bob Young/Seattle Times words was hastily and harshly rewritten by wire services and electronic outlets, facts were minimized to make sensationalized copy, and outcomes have melted Ray Wallace's alleged 1958 hoaxes and family films into his being responsible for the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin footage (even though that was never said). Why is the testimony of an admitted liar, now being feted by a skeptical magician as the truth, having the newspapers believe it all? The media mixing of the lies and rumors with a few facts in the Wallace story is pushing this one to the edge. This is Ray Wallace's ultimate hoax and bitter seed. But we've seen it before. Events tend to occur, which restore equilibrium.

Most witnesses talk of their odd appearance and the horrible odor that seems to accompany them. They are a dark side to the state of Illinois that few of us understand and they lend an air of mystery to the Prairie State that is unrivaled by any other region of the Midwest. The stories of Bigfoot have been passed along from generation to generation and have long been chronicled by both professional and amateur researchers. According to hundreds of reports, the creatures average between 7-8 feet in height. Hair covers most of their bodies, they appear to be proportioned and move like large men, not apes, and have broad shoulders and very little neck. Their faces are normally flattened, they have a heavy jaw and as mentioned, a strong smell seems to emanate from them. While the most famous Bigfoot sightings have taken place in the Pacific Northwest, such creatures do occasionally turn up in Illinois. The earliest sighting that I could find from our region occurred around 1912. A woman named Beaulah Schroat reported that her and her brothers often spotted huge, hairy creatures near their home in Effingham. This may have been the first sighting in Illinois, but it was not the first one in the Great Lakes region. As far back as 1839, witnesses in Michigan City, Indiana were reporting a "wild child" near Fish Lake. Today, we would call such a creature "Bigfoot".

He added that one 42 cm (18-inch) print found in Washington in 1987 has convinced him. "The unique thing about this cast is that it has dermal ridges - and the flow and texture matches the ridge flow texture of one from California," Mr Chilcutt told BBC World Service's Discovery programme. "The ridges are about twice as thick as in a human being."
