TERC and NASA are developing an interdisciplinary year-long course for middle and high school students using astrobiology as its unifying, underlying structure. Through a series of inquiry-based activities centered on the search for life on other planets, students will explore diverse concepts in chemistry, biology, physics, Earth and space science, and engineering. Astrobiology provides students opportunities to master fundamental science concepts in a relevant context and apply their skill and understanding directly in a variety of investigative modes. The curriculum will be available spring of 2004. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation . Opinions expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the Foundation. Resources links for teachers ACA Director elected to Australian Academy of Science Prof Malcolm Walter ACA Director Prof Paul Davies Professor of Natural Philosophy at the ACA News from NASA! Director of the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, Professor Malcolm Walter, has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. The Fellowship recognises a career that has 'significantly advanced, and continues to advance, the world's scientific knowledge.' Prof Walter is honoured for his work in the early evolution of life and the earth, petroleum and mineral resources of ancient sedimentary basins, conservation of unique modern sedimentary environments and the exploration for fossil life on Mars. The Academy consists of around 350 top Australian scientists who have distinguished careers in the physical and biological sciences. Fellows are selected by their peers for 'an exceptional contribution to knowledge in their field'. Normally 16 new Fellows are chosen each year, but this year it was increased to 20 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Academy. There are around 90,000 Australian scientists, which means only around one in 250 is honoured in this way. The Australian Centre for Astrobiology now has three Fellows - Prof Walter, Professor John Veevers and Professor Roger Summons, and a fourth, Prof. Ross Taylor, is Chairman of our Advisory Board.
