The purpose of this paper is to explore funding concepts for arboreta and botanic gardens in the 21st century. Some gardens are planning supplements to the funding received by their home institutions (government, university, trust) but others are blindly moving forward assuming nothing will change. Though funding relates directly to programs, collection policies, amenities and management strategies, this paper will explore only funding. Numerous arboreta were established in the ACT during the early stages of the City's development. These were established in a variety of locations to test the landscape and economic potential of various types of trees. ACT Forests manages all arboreta within its estate in line with its cultural sites of significance More information can be obtained from ACT Forests headquaters The ACT's oldest and largest arboretum was located on Blundell's Flat. Its first planting was in 1929. Blundell's Arboretum was extensively damaged in the January 2003 Fire. It covered an area of over 6 hectares and contained numerous species, varieties and hybrids of pine, fur, spruce and other trees. ACT Forests and Friends of Arboreta are currently working on a plan to reinstate Blundell's Arboretum. The Canary Island Pines near the Mt Stromlo observatory were planted in 1915. They survived the 1952 fire that destroyed 240 hectares of the older plantations in Stromlo and there are now signs that some of them are shooting after the January 2003 Fire. These Canary Island Pines are amongst some of the oldest plantings still surviving in the National Capital. They can be seen from the road as you drive to the summit of Mount Stromlo.

Extractions: BOTANIC GARDENS AND ARBORETA h o m e p h i l o s o p h y p r o j e c t s p e r s o n n e l Blandy Experimental Farm and the State Arboretum of Virginia Boyce, Virginia Nelson-Byrd was invited to prepare the first comprehensive 50-year master plan for the University of Virginia's Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, Virginia. Blandy is a multi-faceted 700 acre property that attracts visitors, students and scientists. At its heart lies the 172 acre State Arboretum of Virginia which draws 70,000 visitors a year. A biological research station attracts scientists from around the world. The challenge was to create a plan that acknowledged the evolving focus of Blandy Farm in three broad categories: University research and education, outreach and environmental education, and curation of plant collections and display gardens. The master plan creates a rich series of experiences for the visitor and resident that weave the Arboretum, research, and unique cultural and physiogeographic characteristics of the site together. The program includes siting of a 15,000 s.f. Education Center, a parking garden, a drive with eight destinations highlighting places of particular interest, bicycle paths, a bridle trail, and an extensive network of walking paths.
