Extractions: @import "css/LaNS_00a.css"; Yale University (New Haven, CT, USA Dr. Altman is Sterling Professor of Biology and Professor of Chemistry at Yale University. He was born in Montreal, Canada and moved to the US where he received a physics degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960. During his final semester at MIT he took a short introductory course in molecular biology. Studying physics in a summer program, he decided to enroll as a graduate student in biophysics at the University of Colorado Medical Center. In 1967 he received a Ph.D. in biophysics at the University of Colorado. After his research assistant position at the University of Colorado, Dr. Altman became a research fellow at Harvard University and studied a DNA endonuclease involved in the replication and recombination of T4 DNA. Two years later he joined the group led by S. Brenner and F. Crick at the Medical Research Council MRC laboratory. He started the work that led to the discovery of RNase P and the enzymatic properties of the RNA subunit of that enzyme. The discovery of the first radiochemically pure precursor to a tRNA molecule enabled Dr. Altman to get a job as an assistant professor at Yale University in 1971, where he currently holds a Sterling Professorship in Biology and a Professorship in Chemistry. Most of his career, Dr. Altman has been concerned with nucleic acid biochemistry and with the genetics of tRNA expression. For his work on the enzymatic cleavage of RNA by RNA he received in 1989 the
