Some are obvious and indisputable while others are more subtle and a source of controversy. Man is the root cause for some of the problems, while nature produces and enhances others. Despite the spectrum of political beliefs, the facts remain, and the real problems facing the Smokies require monitoring and management. Insuring the survival of the Smokies' ecosystem is a major charge given to the National Park Service.

Extractions: Home Environment Air Quality Overview Overview The Council of Governments (COG) provides daily reports and forecasts of regional air quality. The Washington region is a non-attainment area for ground-level ozone according for federal health standards. As a participant in Clean Air Partners , COG helps alert area employers when it declares Air Quality Action Days . The ozone season generally runs between May and September. Through COG, the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC) and its subcommittees coordinate planning to reduce pollutant emissions. Visit the committee page for a description schedule , upcoming meeting documents past meeting documents , and roster . The committee is developing a severe area ozone SIP to reduce pollution levels. News - COG posted the PowerPoint presentation (1.5 MB PPT). - COG released the updated brochure Improving Air Quality: Metropolitan Washington Region - State Implementation Plan (SIP) (234 KB PDF).

Indoor Air Quality Information storehouse on indoor air quality in developing countries. Solid residentialfuels Indoor air quality in commercial buildings Invehicle exposure. http://www.teriin.org/indoor/indoor.htm
Extractions: Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of air in the indoor environment within a building or an institution or commercial facility. These characteristics can be influenced by many factors, even though these buildings or facilities do not have industrial processes and operations found in factories and plants. Contamination arising from sources within the building (e.g., combustion products including carbon monoxide and environmental tobacco smoke; volatile organic compounds from building materials, fabric furnishings, carpet, adhesives, fresh paint, new paneling, and cleaning products; ozone from office equipment).
East TN Clean Fuels Coalition ~ Welcome Promotes the use of alternative fuel vehicles and alternative fuels to reduce dependence on foreign oil and improve air quality in the region. Information about projects and events; includes a list of refueling locations in the region. http://eerc.ra.utk.edu/etcfc/index.html
Extractions: The ETCFC is a participant in the the DOE's national Clean Cities program, which works toward these goals by furthering the use of alternatives to gasoline and diesel in the transportation sector. The alternative fuels include biodiesel electricity ethanol hydrogen ... natural gas and propane . These fuels are between 90% and 100% domestically produced, versus crude oil, for which the U.S. requires about 55% foreign supply (only 45% domestically produced).
The Residential Energy Efficiency Database REED provides its users with the most current and usable residentialenergy efficiency and air quality information available. The http://www.its-canada.com/reed/iaq/
Extractions: WE ARE VERY SORRY, BUT REED IS NOW CLOSED. To the millions of people that use REED, we are very sorry, but we cannot continue to provide this website as a free public service. Our reason for closing is simple, REED was built and is supported entirely by our small family business and we can no longer afford, nor are we willing to continue the upkeep, development and expansion of REED. Although the website has won many awards in the last three years and is used by millions of individuals, educational institutes, businesses, and governments worldwide, we have been unable to find any organizations willing to help financially support REED as a free public service. We have received offers to buy the website, unfortunately none that would agree to continue the development and expansion of REED as a free public information service. Brian J Mitchell
Forsyth County Environmental Affairs Department Daily air quality Report Forecast for the Triad, NC. air quality levels remaincode YELLOW this afternoon with mostly sunny skies and hot temperatures. http://www.co.forsyth.nc.us/EnvAffairs/DlyAirQualRpt.htm
Extractions: This report will be updated by 3:00 PM each business day. Forecast for Thursday, May 27, 2004 O3 = Ozone PM = Particle Pollution CO = Carbon Monoxide (Returns 11/1/04) Forecast Summary Color Code Description Link EPAs "Where I Live" Information for the TRIAD Link Synopsis and Discussion The air mass responsible for nearly three weeks of consecutive low-mid Yellow air quality readings is showing some weakness. Areas of instability will ride over the weakened ridge and increase the chance of thunderstorms for the next few days. Even so, upwind air trajectories still indicate background particle pollution levels in the low Yellow (Moderate) range so it will take a sustained round of showers to wash readings into the Green. Particle levels also spike in between rounds of thunderstorms so the net result for the next few days is more of the same, particle pollution readings in the AQI 51-60 range. Models suggest a weak back-door cool front for Saturday, but that may also serve to concentrate pollutants over the Triad. Ozone remains a non-factor with the cloudiness and high moisture content of the airmass (WEINSTOCK). To receive a copy of this report via e-mail each day, Click here:
EPA - Transportation And Air Quality Protects public health and the environment by controlling air pollution and encouraging travel choices that minimize emissions. http://www.epa.gov/otaq/
Extractions: Research EPA is announcing two additions to its series of Clean Diesel Programs . First, the Clean Air Nonroad Diesel Rule part of the suite of inter-related rules collectively known as the Clean Air Rules of 2004 , combines more stringent emission standards for engines used in nonroad diesel equipment with cleaner nonroad diesel fuel, which will result in significant environmental and public health benefits. In a separate action, EPA is announcing its intent to propose new emission standards for locomotives and marine diesel engines U.S. EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) protects public health and the environment by controlling air pollution from motor vehicles, engines, and the fuels used to operate them, and by encouraging travel choices that minimize emissions. These "mobile sources" include cars and light trucks, large trucks and buses, nonroad recreational vehicles (such as dirt bikes and snowmobiles), farm and construction equipment, lawn and garden equipment, marine engines, aircraft, and locomotives. Overview: Pollutants and Programs: Information on how much air pollution and greenhouse gases are emitted by mobile sources, the programs OTAQ has undertaken to control these emissions, and the impact of those programs on air quality and climate change.
