Extractions: Sparrman The Aardwolf Proteles cristatus ) is a small mammal related to the Hyena , native to southern Africa. The name means "earth wolf" in Afrikaans. There are two subspecies : The Aardwolf is most like the Brown Hyena but smaller with a more pointed muzzle , sharper ears , vertical stripes, and a long mane down the middle line of the neck and back. It stands about 50cm at the shoulder, weighs around 9kg, and has two glands at the rear that secrete a musky fluid for marking territory and communicating with other aardwolves. The Aardwolf is nocturnal and burrows in the ground living primarily on termites in the genus Trinervitermes but will also feed on termites in the genera Odontotermes Macrotermes , and Hodotermes . Unlike other large insect eating mammals like Aardvarks and anteaters , Aardwolves can't dig, and so have to wait outside the termite mound to lick up the termites when they come out. An Aardwolf can lick up over 30 000 termites in a single day.

We cant come within a hundred yards of the wall without losing more men than we can afford." "What are the losses?" replied Colonel Blake. He knew the answer, but needed to hear it from the lips of another before it would sink in. "Verifiable enemy casualties are about 42 of the heretics, two Rhinos, and one Predator. Our losses are as follows: 343 dead; 217 wounded; 87 tanks of various types " "Enough. We must inform the Administratum that Corphyx VII is lost," said the Colonel, knowing that it would mean his death. The Administratum has never been known for treating failed infantry commanders with kindness. His shoulders slumped, defeated in spirit. "Commander! Colonel! You must come to Communications at once!" shouted a young comm-link officer. "You wont believe your ears!" "What is the status here?" asked Blake, upon entering the tracking station.

Walker's mammals of the World Online is available as a Stand-alone database or as an Add-on to Wildlife Worldwide Ernest P. Walker was involved for over 30 years in preparing the first edition of Mammals of the World, published in 1964. He began the project, originally called Genera of Recent Mammals of the World, shortly after becoming assistant director of the National Zoological Park, Washington, D.C., in 1930. In this capacity he accumulated extensive knowledge of mammals, both by direct observation and through contact with other zoo personnel, mammalogists, and naturalists. He was an accomplished photographer and made a point of taking a picture of each kind of mammal that arrived at the National Zoo. He loved all living things and personally worked with many different species of wild mammals, sometimes caring for them in his own office or home. Walker formally retired at the end of 1956 but continued to maintain an office at the National Zoo. Through a research grant from the National Institutes of Health, and under sponsorship of the New York Zoological Society, he then was able to devote himself full-time to the compilation of data and the collection of additional facts and photographs needed for

Extractions: Since 1970 the Zoo has won national and international recognition and awards for successfully breeding threatened and endangered species. In two instances, this Zoo's breeding programs have increased the world's threatened species in captivity. This Zoo has also been the first institution to successfully breed populations of certain endangered species. Endangered species born or hatched in our Zoo and reintroduced to the wild have included Puerto Rican Crested Toad, Golden Lion Tamarin, Bali Mynah, and Guam Rail. The black rhino is on the brink of extinction in the wild. Captive propagation is its only hope. The Sedgwick County Zoo has achieved reproduction, but more importantly, we have contributed to the small bank of information concerning female rhino reproductive systems. The African hunting dog is a wild predator found in both eastern and southern Africa. It is threatened with extinction due to habitat fragmentation and disease transmission from domestic dogs of the Masai people. Our recent success in reproducing African hunting dogs was documented in a publication presented at the 1996 Kansas Academy of Science annual conference in Topeka.
