Mencius An article published in the journal theosophy in 1927. Considers the teachings of this sage from a theosophical perspective. http://www.wisdomworld.org/additional/ancientlandmarks/Mencius.html
Extractions: M ENCIUS THE period immediately following the era of Lao Tzu and Confucius is of special interest to the student of Theosophy. An hundred schools and a thousand sects sprang into existence a few antagonistic to both, a few true to their teachings, and many playing and profiting with their names and sayings. We do not propose to deal with the first and the third. Our task is to point at the landmarks of the Wisdom-Religion and so we must now turn to the labours of those who carried on the work of the two great men. Schisms arose as between the early apostles after the passing of Jesus. Mencius on the one hand, Lieh Tzu and Chwang Tzu on the other. If they and their immediate admirers had remained loyal to the Original Impulse which manifested in the works of Lao Tzu and Confucius they would have prepared the mind of their race to be fecundated by the philosophy of the Great Buddha himself which was presently to energize and build a spiritual structure in China. But the schisms produced sects, as they always do; and when in the first century of the Christian era Buddhism reached China, the mind of the people was not ready; and those who received it themselves became a sect. Three important names emerge Mencius, Lieh Tzu, and Chwang Tzu. After them came degradation and corruption. In the sayings of these three the Theosophic influence of the two Sages is felt, but with 275 B.C. the force spent itself; there was hardly any in the public world to keep it focalized in his own life or school. Ambition for personal power and gain made the channels impure and unfit. Then arose temples and priests with ceremonies according to Confucius, in letter but contrary to the spirit; also the lower forms of magic and mediumism and psychical practices which were called the manifestations of Tao, but were as far away from the Tao of the great Classic as the Christian Churches are from the Sermon on the Mount or the psychism of Neo-Theosophy is from the Wisdom of the pure Theosophy of H.P.B.

The Stoics identified God with the primordial fire of Heraclitus, the highest aether, Anima Mundi and providence. Cleanthes brought to this formal requirement of Stoic thought an ardent devotion which exalts the creative fire as the focus, foundation and director of the cosmos, and the Logos as the source of order and harmony within it. For Cleanthes, there is a distinct contrast between Deity and matter, between the Logos and the cosmos, but this duality is understood within an embracing unity. He called the Heraclitean fire phlox

It is the search for that , the study of that , that is Theosophy. And that is what we would have the world respect and understand as Theosophy, not psychic extravaganzas, mostly fantasy with perhaps a modicum of truth; not individual pet theories, no matter how sincere their proponents; but that which can be tested by the strength and quality of its very universality. Helena Blavatsky stated in "what are the theosophists": Those quoted words, 'an inspiration of his own,' refer to a definition of a Thesophist given by the English medieval philosopher and true Rosicrucian, Henry Vaughan. "a theosophist," he says, "is one who gives you a theory of god or the works of god, which has not revelation, but an inspiration of his own for its basis." And in the article "what is theosophy?", Blavatsky declares: "in this view every great thinker and philosopher, especially every founder of a new religion, school or philosophy, or sect, is necessarily a theosophist ..." "with every man (she says in "What are the Theosophists?" ) "that is searching in his own way after a knowledge of the Divine Principle, of man's relations to it, and nature's manifestations of it, Theosophy is allied. It is likewise the ally of honest science... And it is also the ally of every honest religion ..."

Extractions: Theosophy is the body of truths which forms the basis of all religions, and which cannot be claimed as the exclusive possession of any. It restores to the world the Science of the Spirit, teaching man to know the Spirit as himself and the mind and body as his servants. It illuminates the scriptures and doctrines of religions by unveiling their hidden meanings, and thus justifying them at the bar of intelligence, as they are ever justified in the eyes of intuition. It puts death in its rightful place, as a recurring incidence in an endless life, opening the gateway to a fuller and more radiant existence. Consciousness, Universal and Individual First, that the universe is not just a place where nature's forces operate by chance. Every event that has happened from the beginning of time has happened according to certain laws inherent in the universe. These laws are the expression of a Consciousness . Everything that exists, from the electron to the largest star, is impregnated with Consciousness. This Fundamental Reality is so far beyond our grasp that sages and saints have called it by contradictory terms. Many have termed it 'God;' but some have called it Law, Heaven, the Great Architect, Evolution. Each man, according to his temperament and his experience, must determine how he will regard this Consciousness which directs everything. Let us call it

EPICTETUS Epictetus was born in the middle of the first century A.D. at Hierapolis in Phrygia, a region in Asia Minor known for its enthusiastic devotion to ancient deities. Little is known of his life, and even his name may be a pseudonym, for epiktetos means 'acquired', Epictetus being a slave from birth. His strong will and self-control manifested early in life. While still young, his master put his leg in a device for torture. "You will break my leg", Epictetus said quietly, and when his leg was in fact broken, he calmly added, "Did I not tell you so?" As a consequence of this cruelty, he was lame for life. Taken to Rome, he was owned by Epaphroditus, an administrative secretary to Nero. His master sent him to take lessons from Gaius Musonius Rufus, a creative and courageous Stoic whom Apollonius of Tyana defended before the emperor and who was later driven into exile. Epictetus eventually won his freedom and settled in Rome to teach philosophy. He was deeply struck by the teachings of Musonius, and attempted to assimilate them thoroughly rather than produce doctrines of his own invention. Following the example of Socrates, Epictetus wrote nothing for preservation, though he made notes for his own use in discussions. He devoted his whole life at Nicopolis to philosophy, travelling only once to Athens and possibly to Olympia. Nevertheless, his reputation as a teacher spread throughout the Greek-speaking world, and Flavius Arrianus, a historian from Bithynia, became his most devoted disciple. For a number of years Arrian recorded the discourses of Epictetus, preserving for future generations both the recorded teachings and the oral methods of instruction of his master. These were published largely in their original stenographic form after his death as the

Notes on Madame Blavatsky's Baboon by Will Thackara The following comments are written in response to a request for "a rebuttal" to two brief essays on " Theosophy and Madame Blavatsky " by Matthew Mulligan Goldstein, posted on the Victorian Web at Brown University. As these essays are representative of a growing number of books and articles written in a similar vein, and because time prohibits analysis and criticism of each one individually, these remarks are more generally addressed, and include points not necessarily at issue in the Victorian Web articles. In 1969 Claremont Graduate School professor John A. Hutchison commented that ours is an age of unprecedented religious illiteracy. This is particularly true of the American academic community. While religion, along with sex and politics, continues as a perennial subject for discussion, it is also true that in such discussion a shocking lack of ordinary factual knowledge is often shown. Men who would feel disgraced to be ignorant of science, art, or politics show no compunction about harboring the grossest and crudest misconceptions in the field of religion (Paths of Faith, vii).

But he and his English wife a "weird, witch-like creature" as Dr. Hartmann calls her soon found an opportunity of preparing a cunning scheme to ruin H.P.B.'s reputation and destroy the Society. Fortunately, as will be shown, the Fates worked against them before it was consummated. Though H.P.B. and Olcott suspected no special danger to the Society in India when they left, the Masters were perfectly aware of the coming crisis, for when Olcott and Mohini were alone in France in a compartment of a train on their way from Paris to London on April 5, 1884, a letter from K.H. dropped from the roof warning Olcott of the plot that was hatching at Adyar, and telling him not to be discouraged, however threatening it might appear. One sentence reads: You have harboured a traitor and an enemy under your roof for years, and the missionary party are more than ready to avail of any help she may be induced to give. A regular conspiracy is on foot. She is maddened by the appearance of Mr. Lane Fox and the powers you have given to the Board of Control.

Extractions: By Grace F. Knoche In 1882 The Society for Psychical Research (SPR) was founded in London, England, for the purpose of examining impartially in a scientific spirit those paranormal faculties which are inexplicable by recognized norms. Intrigued by certain happenings reportedly occurring by or in the presence of H. P. Blavatsky, which after careful inquiry appeared to several SPR members to merit investigation, a Committee of Reference was appointed to amass evidence from theosophists visiting London during the summer of 1884 notably Henry S. Olcott, H. P. Blavatsky, and Mohini M. Chatterji, an attorney from Calcutta, India; also Alfred P. Sinnett who had alluded in his book The Occult World (1881) to several extra-ordinary happenings. While their findings were inconclusive, a number of strange events reported by several theosophists of repute led the SPR Committee to issue a "preliminary and provisional Report" in December 1884. Because of its tentative character it was circulated privately, and whereas the Committee withheld endorsement of what they had seen and heard, the reportage by and large was fair and open-minded. At the theosophical headquarters in India, however, matters had taken a drastically different turn. During HPB's and Olcott's several months' absence in Europe, Emma and Alexis Coulomb whom HPB had sheltered in 1880 and to whom she had given posts of responsibility had been dismissed for flagrant misconduct by the Board of Control appointed by Olcott. Their keys to HPB's rooms were handed over to Dr. Franz Hartmann. It was discovered that Alexis Coulomb was in process of constructing a secret passage in the wall behind the "shrine"

Once you understand what this New World Order really is, and how it is being gradually implemented, you will be able to see it progressing in your daily news!! First, we need to provide a little background to you about this seminar. In early 1990, I was being interviewed on a Christian radio station about the coming New World Order. At the conclusion of the hour, I received a phone call at the station, from a man who said he was now a Born Again Christian, but that he had come out of the occult. This gentleman, whom we will call John, said that he was thrilled to hear a Christian leader that had more than a rudimentary idea as to what was going on. Furthermore, John said that he would like to show me much more material I should read to deepen my understanding of the occultic New World Order.
