Extractions: Tokyo: Shunjûsha, 1988. ¥2,000 cloth T he sixth Nanzan symposium brought together representatives of the Japanese Tendai Buddhist tradition, on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Japanese Tendai Buddhism on Mt. Hiei, to conduct a Buddhist-Christian dialogue on the theme of theory and practice in religion. The discussions were organized around a threefold structure (based on the Tendai scheme) of Buddha/God, mind, and sentient beings/nature. In the search for a contemporary meaning to doctrine and practice, the role of social responsibility and religious structures came up frequently in the discussions. Jan Van Bragt, "An Overview"

Extractions: a Karuna Tendai Dharma Center Tendai Buddhism stems from the Chinese Buddhism of the 6th century known as T'ien-t'ai and is one of the earliest schools of Japanese Buddhism. Tendai incorporates meditation along with scholarship, devotional practices, mindfulness, chanting, and tantra. The founder of T'ien-t'ai wrote that the three vehicles (Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana) are one vehicle - Buddhayana - that summarizes the Tendai approach. The Center KTDC is located in the Berkshires near the New York/Massachusetts border and is surrounded by streams, pastures, and forests. There is a profound sense of spirituality both within and around the Center which functions as a village temple and offers people the opportunity to practice and study Buddhism in a community setting. Aside from regular meditation services, the Center celebrates activities in the Buddhist Calendar, performs weddings, house blessings, purifications, funerals, etc.. and offers workshops in areas of Buddhist and Japanese culture, such as Ikebana (flower arranging) and calligraphy. Wednesday Meditation and Pot-Luck Every Wednesday evening we offer a program that includes a meditation service, a lecture on Buddhist philosophy, practice, or history, and a pot-luck dinner. These meetings are open to all. The meditation service begins at 6:30 PM. Donations to help cover costs will be accepted with our thanks.

Deceit The Japanese Tendai Sect was founded in 805 AD by Dengyo Daishi , bringing back with him the Lotus Sutra and the teachings of the Chinese T'ien-t'ai sect. Dengyo Daishi founded Enryaku-ji prior to his death, but it took years of formal debate through letters exchanged with the teacher Tokuitsu to establish his school as having the right to perform it's own ordinations, and he didn't win his debate until around the same time he died. The practice or "praxis" of T'ien-t'ai Buddhism, as envisioned by Dengyo involved "Mahayana" precepts, and so was incompatible with the older six schools based to the southwest in Nara. Thus Dengyo's founding of T'ien-t'ai was a revolutionary development. The teachings of the new "Tendai" school promised to integrate and develop a fully realized Mahayana in Japan. Tendai Buddhism was to be based on the Lotus Sutra and its teaching of "Ichinen Sanzen" or "Three thousand worlds interpolated into a single thought moment." It's teachings and practice incorporated "mind contemplation"/meditation, study of Mahayana precepts and teachings, development of fully realized human beings, and a integrative approach to Buddhism. However, Tendai came to be known as "theoretical Tendai" because from the start it lacked a prescriptive and practical "praxis" or practice that would be attractive to ordinary people lacking time, or engaging to monks who would after a while be prone to boredom. From the beginning, while the teachings were formally under the influence of the Chinese T'ien-t'ai sect and the Lotus Sutra, it was heavilly influenced by mainland Chinese
