    Extractions: These organizations base their belief on Buddhist traditions of non- violence and equality of all human beings. The traditions date back to Shakyamuni Buddha (also known as Gautama Buddha, 500 BC in India), T'ien-t'ai (5th century in China) and Nichiren Daishonin (13th century in Japan). Soka Gakkai was established in 1930 as an educator's organization (originally called Soka Kyoiku Gakkai which means Value-Creating Educational Society) by two Japanese educators, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda. In 1928, they became believers of Nichiren's Buddhism which is based upon Shakyamuni and T'ien-t'ai's teachings. Makiguchi became the 1st president. The teaching consists of three practices: (1) Reciting 2 chapters of the Lotus Sutra and chanting "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" to the Gohonzon, which is the copy of the mandala inscribed by Nichiren Daishonin, twice a day - morning and evening; (2) Helping others to overcome their daily struggles and problems by teaching them the power of the practice; (3) Studying Nichiren Daishonin's doctrines through reading his writings called Gosho. Because of their opposition to the nationalistic Shinto religion and the Japanese militaristic government, both Makiguchi and Toda were imprisoned during WW II. Makiguchi died in prison in his protest against militarism. Toda, who was able to survive the imprisonment, reestablished Soka Gakkai after the war and became the 2nd president of Soka Gakkai. Toda determined to establish eternal world peace by spreading the Buddhist teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. Daisaku Ikeda became the 3rd president in 1960 and spread Nichiren Buddhism to 129 countries. He has so far visited 44 countries by making more than 160 trips. He has received many awards from all over the world including two medals from the United Nations for his support of UN and his tireless effort for world peace.

In 1971, Mr. Ikeda began a series of discussions with the British historian Arnold Toynbee which were later published under the title Choose Life. Mr. Ikeda has since criss-crossed the globe inpursuit of peace and has met with leading scholars, activists, ordinary citizens and world leaders, among them former Brazilian Academy of Letters president Austregesilo de Athayde, Norwegian peace scholar Johan Galtung and former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev.

Takako Kawano and I attended a Hokkeko meeting to try to prevent a former SGI member from receiving a Nikken Gohonzon many years ago. Etsuko Fernandez and I accompanied a reformist priest in addition to a translator to the homes of former SGI members, only to have doors slammed in our faces. Not the funnest way to change one’s karma, but very effective indeed. In February of 2001, I attended the Courageous Heart Conference at the FNCC along with Shizue Negishi and Etsuko Fernandez. This conference typically deals directly with what used to be called the Temple Issue, but is now called Soka Spirit. Since that time, I have continued to sponsor Soka Spirit Daimoku sessions at my house on Thursday nights. We also have one Soka Spirit study meeting a month which Yumi Song facilitates. And, by the way, she does a wonderful job — thank you, Yumisan! The benefit from my involvement in Soka Spirit has truly been profound. I feel like my human revolution has been put on “fast forward.” I have much more insight into myself and am much more aware of my own shortcomings. And, as painful as that can be at times, when I’ve determined to do the necessary human revolution, a wonderful conspicuous benefit follows, oh so quickly — often within minutes or hours of me making a fresh determination in front of the Gohonzon, to overcome some negative behavior or aspect of myself.

Nichiren Shoshu was, among Japanese Buddhist schools, a relatively small religious group, possessing approximately forty temples. Internally, it had become stagnant and corrupt, torn by intensifying factional fighting, and had lost sight of Nichiren Daishonin's spirit. While the priesthood leaned completely toward a discriminatory view of laity, a doctrine that emphasized their own authority, and an excessive emphasis on ceremonies and formality, the Soka Gakkai grew and advanced, inspired by direct faith in the Daishonin’s teachings and his spirit. The Soka Gakkai proceeded to spread the teachings with the conviction that Buddhism could not be separated from the lives of individuals and society. From the beginning, rather than simply serving as a parish organization of Nichiren Shoshu and submitting itself only to the guidance and instructions of the priests at branch temples, the Soka Gakkai was a spiritually independent group that also managed its own affairs.

It has branches throughout the world, and it is the clearly the biggest Buddhist organization in the United States. Currently, estimates very widely as to the American membership, but the truth is probably somewhere between the 300,000 of Soka Gakkai's official 1997 census and Philip Hammond's conservative estimate of approximately 36,000. Soka Gakkai represents the largest and most ethnically diverse group of Buddhists in the United States. One study in Miami suggests the following: 32.81% of members consider themselves to be Caucasian, 10.94% African American, 10.94% Japanese, 37.5% Hispanic, and 7.81% other. Together, these ethnic groups hold close to a proportional role in the leadership of the organization in the United States. Throughout its history Soka Gakkai has attempted to create a place for itself in the balance between a Nichiren sectarian religious group and a humanistic institution for the educational creation of value. However, the many tensions between Soka Gakkai and the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood led to a break between the two in 1991. At least popularly, this particular issue culminated in the priesthood's anger at the "Ode to Joy" being played at a Soka Gakkai event. Other tensions seem to have resulted from complications concerning charges for priestly rituals and a fear over the growing charisma of Soka Gakkai president Ikeda Daisaku, as well as from the radical increase in religious tolerance under Ikeda's leadership. These differences contributed to a breakdown in the relationship between Soka Gakkai and the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood, which culminated in a massive excommunication of Soka Gakkai by the sect's high priest.
