Extractions: 1855 QUAKER MEETING HOUSE Just outside the main entrance to Longwood Gardens near Route 1 is the historic 1855 Longwood Meeting House, which now houses a Tourist Information Center (see Map ). The building was purchased in 1940 by Pierre du Pont and has belonged to Longwood ever since, but it was constructed 85 years earlier as a Quaker Meeting House. Its early years were turbulent and closely intertwined with the Religious Society of Friends and with the celebrated Underground Railroad. The Religious Society of Friends George Fox established the Religious Society of Friends in mid 17th-century England. Through his own Christian soul searching, Fox made a radical discovery: God lives in and talks directly to everyone. It was apparent to Fox that something of the Divine is implanted in each human being. From this originated the Quaker phrase, "There is that of God in every person." This Spirit is also referred to as the "Light" or the "Inner Light." The term "Quaker" was first used by an English magistrate as one of contempt and derision. During a sentencing, George Fox bade the court to "tremble at the word of the Lord." The magistrate labeled Fox a "Quaker." The official name for the movement, however, is the Religious Society of Friends.

Extractions: Society of Friends Statement on Global Climate Change At the June 2000 session of Interim Meeting, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting approved this minute on the responsibility to address global climate change: Protecting God's Earth and its fullness of life is of fundamental religious concern to the Society of Friends. The links between human activity, the dramatic rise in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, and the rise of average global temperatures are now of sufficient concern to lead us to action. Climate change is apt to affect everyone and everything: food, water, air quality, biodiversity, forests, public health, social order and world peace. It is therefore an issue of great importance for ecological sustainability, social and economic justice, and international diplomacy. Because the United States uses much more energy per capita than any other nation, our policies to curtail greenhouse gas emissions will be crucial. We must consider not only the kind of fuels used directly but also the energy embodied in all material goods we use. Our nation has long set a standard for others with consequences of past and current behavior. Involvement by religious communities in education and advocacy will be needed if policies to address global warming are to succeed in politics or in practice in the US. We unite in urging individual Friends, monthly meetings, and other Friends organizations to seek Divine Guidance in understanding how to:

Extractions: The Society of Friends of the Allard Pierson Museum was founded before the Second World War, and supported the museum in the first difficult years. This Society was not able to maintain its status. In 1969 a new Society was therefore founded, which is at present one of the largest societies of musem friends in the Netherlands, with 1800 members. The Society wants to promote the interest of the public for the museum. To this purpose they organize lectures and bring forth publications. They also collect money for new acquisitions and mediate with private collectors who want to loan or give objects to the museum. With the Society's assistance, all kinds of activities can take place in the museum. All who consider themselves friends of the museum and want to support the purpose of the Society, are warmly invited to become a member. Members have free admittance to the museum and receive the Journals of the Society of Friends . Publications of objects from the museum and information on the exhibitions can be found in the journals. Members are also invited for guided tours, lectures, exhibitions and other activities in the museum. Lastly, the Society offers the use of the library of the Department Mediterranean Archaeology to her members.
