Extractions: The word shaman, used internationally, has its origin in manchú-tangu and has reached the ethnologic vocabulary through Russian. The word originated from saman (xaman), derived from the verb scha-, "to know", so shaman means someone who knows, is wise, a sage. Further ethnologic investigations shows that the true origin for the word Shaman can be tracked from the Sanskrit initially, then through Chinese-Buddhist mediation to the manchú-tangu, indicating a much deeper but now overlooked connection between early Buddhism and Shamanism generally. In Pali it is schamana, in Sanskrit sramana translated to something like "buddhist monk, ascetic". The intermediate Chinese term is scha-men. (source)

Extractions: by Éric Chazot and Jean-Pierre Girolami click on small images for full size images with captions Over the centuries, the steep slopes of the Himalayas, from the great mountains to the plains, have been populated by a variety of ethnic groups of Mongoloid or Indo-Aryan descent. Despite their diversity, these groups reflect a unique geographical environment that has shaped their way of life and thought. Over the course of the last fifty years, major changes have occurred in these remote hills. Political determination to modernize the region and open it up to the outside world has altered social structures and demographic distribution, and eroded traditional and religious values. Artistic endeavor, which here is largely rooted in religious beliefs, has been affected by the disappearance of not only ancient deities and forms of worship but also certain crafts, styles, and objects Himalayan tribal art is characterized primarily by its links with shamanism, which underlies and accompanies all religious beliefs in the region, whether Hindu or Buddhist. Although ethnological research has given us a better understanding of tribal life in the Himalayas, we still know relatively little about the art, statuary, ritual objects, or even older items of daily use, despite their cultural or aesthetic value.
Shaman's Song This page is in honor of the shamanic tradition which I believe underlies all human religions and belief systems, as shamanism has been practiced on every inhabited continent in the world since paleolithic times. http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/6923/
Extractions: from Joan Halifax, Shamanic Voices From the earliest times, humans have known that song, and its accompanying poetry, could take us out of our ego selves and transport us into the hidden, magical realms where spirits dwell. Along with the drum and the rattle, the shaman's song allows us to transcend this physical world and re-member again our connection to the source, to experience again the unity of the universe. This page is in honor of the shamanic tradition which I believe underlies all human religions and belief systems, as shamanism has been practiced on every inhabited continent in the world since paleolithic times. Since antiquity, shamans have been those individuals gifted with the ability to access the hidden realities and to dialogue with spiritual representatives of the universe for the purposes of healing and divination. Shamans also believe strongly in the interconnectedness of all things; therefore, everything that existsincluding rocks, tree, animals, the elementsis alive and imbued with spirit and is capable of being communicated with; even their songs can be learned and sung. In tribal cultures, shamans are the healers, the medicine people, or simply, "those who know," those who learn from both the natural and the spiritual worlds.

Shamans (magician, healer, or medium) owe their power to mystical communion with the spirit world. The shaman shields humans from destructive spirits by rendering the spirits harmless. He receives his power from a spirit who selects him and whom he cannot refuse. Characteristically, he goes into auto-hypnotic trances, during which he is said to be in contact with spirits. He occupies a position of great power and prestige in his tribe. Noted especially among Siberians, traditional shamanism is also found among the Eskimos, some Native American tribes, in SE Asia, and in Oceania. It is transcendence for a broader purpose, the helping of humankind. The enlightenment of shamanism is the ability to light up what others perceive as darkness, and thereby to see and to journey on behalf of a humanity that is perilously close to losing its spiritual connectedness with all its relatives, the plants and animals of this good Earth.

Extractions: From the most ancient times, human beings have practiced disciplines of psychospiritual transformation with devoted energy and intention. Modern systems of psychotherapy are the inheritors of three great traditions of transformation, in which the human is seen as engaged in purposive processes of exploration and integration in many realms of consciousness. In this essay I describe some of the common methods used, as well as the major metaphors for transformation. One possible definition of shamanism is that it is the disciplined approach to what has been variously called "non-ordinary reality", "the sacred", "the mystery", "the supernatural", "the inner world(s)", or "the otherworld". Psychologically speaking, one could say these expressions refer to realms of consciousness that lie outside the boundaries of our usual and ordinary perception. The depth psychologies derived from psychoanalysis refer to such normally inaccessible realms as "the unconscious", or "the collective unconscious". This would, however, be too limiting a definition for shamanism, if "unconscious" is taken to refer to something within the individual, i.e. intrapsychic. Shamanic practice involves the exploration not only of unknown aspects of our own psyche, but also the unknown aspects of the world around us, - the external as well as internal mysteries. There are three traditional systems of consciousness transformation, systems of belief and practice in which the exploration of these non-ordinary realms is pursued with discipline and intention: shamanism, alchemy and yoga. Of these, shamanism is of course the oldest, and the one with the widest distribution all over the globe.
Hallucinogenic Drugs And Plants In Psychotherapy And Shamanism It became clear to me as a result of these explorations, that while Western psychotherapy and indigenous shamanism may sometimes use the same or similar http://www.rmetzner-greenearth.org/plants.html
Extractions: California Institute of Integral Studies Realizing that there were traditions reaching into pre-historic times of the respectful use of hallucinogens for shamanic healing and divination, I became much more interested in the plants and mushrooms that have a history of such use. Indigenous people are known to have a profound knowledge of plants and herbs and their effects on the body and mind; they are well able to distinguish harmful from beneficial medicines. For this reason the vision-inducing plants that have a tradition of shamanic usage are much more likely to be safe, in contrast to newly discovered and synthesized drugs, the use of which may often involve unknown long-term risks. It became clear to me as a result of these explorations, that while Western psychotherapy and indigenous shamanism may sometimes use the same or similar psychoactive substances for healing and obtaining knowledge (called diagnosis in the West and divination in traditional cultures), there are profound differences between them in underlying worldview and assumptions about the nature of reality. In this paper I propose to compare the use of psychoactives, as well as the underlying worldviews, in four systems of consciousness transformation: (1) psychotherapy within the standard Western paradigm, (2) shamanic rituals of healing and divination, (3) syncretic folk religious ceremonies, and (4) what I call hybrid therapeutic-shamanic rituals, which represent a blending of indigenous shamanic and Western psychotherapeutic approaches.

Shamanism And Music In Siberia, Sakha (Yakutia) shamanism and music in Sakha/Siberia (Yakutia). What is shamanism? PostShamanic Traditions by Dean Edwards. shamanism. is http://www.hulu.de/shamanism/shamanism.htm
Extractions: Post-Shamanic Traditions by Dean Edwards Shamanism is classified by anthropologists as an archaic magico-religious phenomenon in which the shaman is the great master of ecstasy. Shamanism itself, was defined by the late Mircea Eliade as a technique of ecstasy. A shaman may exhibit a particular magical specialty (such as control over fire, wind or magical flight). When a specialization is present the most common is as a healer. The distinguishing characteristic of shamanism is its focus on an ecstatic trance state in which the soul of the shaman is believed to leave the body and ascend to the sky (heavens) or descend into the earth (underworld). The shaman makes use of spirit helpers, with whom he or she communicates, all the while retaining control over his or her own consciousness. (Examples of possession occur, but are the exception, rather than the rule.) It is also important to note that while most shamans in traditional societies are men, either women or men may and have become shamans.
