Site Map St. Monica, Middleton, Nova Scotia The first Mass, of which we have record, celebrated in Middleton, was in 1919, in the old Theatre, by Father James McKinnon. From 1909 to 1926, the services of the church were held in the home of A.A. Forrestall, even one funeral being there. Later, the congregation's growth requiring larger accommodations, services were held in such places as the Armoury , The Community Hall and The Rink. In 1952, the present church was erected, and, though the interior was unfinished and the people sat on piles of materials, nail kegs or whatever else would serve, it was put to immediate use. In July, 1959 the Parish was established by the late Bishop Lemenager, with Rev. L.J. Theriault the first Parish Priest, since which time it has steadily progressed from strength to greater strength. St. Brigid, at East Dalhousie, is presently a Mission of St. Monica's, Middleton. Mass Hours:

After the Civil War, immigrants from Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Poland swelled the ranks of the Roman Catholic Church. The entrance of 100,000 Catholic Mexicans into America by 1900 also helped the growth of the church. The greater portion of Roman Catholic immigrants settled in the Eastern United States, but churches were established all over the country. American Catholic Historical Society

Extractions: Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... C > Early Roman Christian Cemeteries A B C D ... Z This article treats briefly of the individual catacomb cemeteries in the vicinity of Rome. For general information on the Roman catacombs, see ROMAN CATACOMBS . This summary account of the individual catacombs will follow the order of the great Roman roads, along which were usually located the Christian cemeteries. Sources of the History of the Catacombs There is but the faintest hope that any new documents will ever turn up to illustrate the pre-Constantinian period of the ancient cemeteries of Rome. Their place is taken necessarily by late martyrologies, calendars, Acts of the martyrs, writings of popes, historico-liturgical books of the Roman Church, and by old topographies and itineraries come down to us from the Carlovingian epoch. Among the old martyrologies the most famous is that known as the Martyrology of St. Jerome ( Martyrologium Hieronymianum Parvum Romanum ) Martyrology, and which served as a basis for the well-known compilation of Ado. Next in importance comes an ancient Roman Calendar, published between the years 334 and 356, written out and illustrated by a certain Furius Dionysius Philocalus. This calendar contains a list of the popes, known formerly as the "Bucherian Catalogue", from the name of its first editor, and the Liberian, from the pope (Liberius, 352-56) with whom it ends. The whole book is now usually known as the "Chronographer of A.D. 354". Besides this ancient papal catalogue, the book contains an official calendar, civil and astronomical, lunar cycles, and a Paschal table calculated to 412, a list of the prefects of Rome from 253 to 354 (the only continuous one known), a chronicle of Roman history, the "Natalitia Caesarum", and other useful contents, which have caused it to be styled "the oldest
CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Sts. Rufina Brief notices on four saints named Rufina a roman martyr, a Spanish martyr, a St. Rufina venerated in Cappadocia, and a martyr in Campania. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13221a.htm
Extractions: Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... R > Sts. Rufina A B C D ... Z The present Roman Martyrology records saints of this name on the following days: (2) On 19 July, Justa and Rufina, martyrs at Seville (Hispalis) in Spain. Only St. Justa is mentioned in the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum" (93), but in the historical martyrologies (Quentin, "Les martyrologes historiques", 176-77) Justina is also mentioned, following the legendary Acts. There is no doubt that both are historical martyrs of the Spanish Church. (4) On 24 of 25 August, the feast of two martyrs, Rufina and Eutyche, at Cupua in Campania is recorded in the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum" (110). Nothing further is known of either of these saints. Historical mention is made of the following: (1) On 19 April, a group of martyrs in Melitene in Armenia, one of whom bears the name of Rufus. These martyrs are mentioned already in the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum" (ed. De Rossi-Duchesne, 46). (2) On 1 August, Rufus, with several companions who, according to the most reliable manuscripts of the "Martyrol. Hieronym." died at Tomi, the place being afterwards by mistake changed to Philadelphia (cf. Quentin, "Les martyrologes historiques", 337). (3) On 27 August, two martyrs named Rufus at Capua one, whose name also appears as Rufinus in the "Martyrol. Hieronym." (ed. cit., 111). The other is said to have suffered with a companion, Carponius, in the Diocletian persecution (cf. "Bibliotheca hagiographica latina", II, 1070; Acta SS., VI August, 18-19). (4) On 25 September, several martyrs at Damascus, among them one named Rufus. (5) On 7 November, a St. Rufus, who is said to have been Bishop of Metz; his history, however, is legendary. His name was inserted at a later date in an old manuscript of the "Martyrol. Hieronym." (ed. cit., 140). In the ninth century his
