Extractions: It seems appropriate to begin this discussion with a statement of what the Old Roman Catholic Church is not. It is not a sect or a schism as some of its self-appointed critics may claim. The Old Roman Catholic Church is a body of Christians committed to the Person of Jesus Christ and His teaching and, as shall become evident in this article, forms an historic part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The Old Roman Catholic Church affirms its historic continuity with the Apostolic Church of the first century through the ancient See of Utrecht in Holland. St. Willibrord, the Apostle of the Netherlands was consecrated to the Episcopacy by Pope Sergius I in 696 A.D. at Rome. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he established his See at Utrecht. In addition, he established the dioceses at Deventer and Haarlem. One of his successors was St. Boniface, the Apostle of Germany. The Church of Utrecht also provided a worthy occupant for the Papal See in 1552 in the person of Pope Hadrian VI, while two of the most able exponents of the spiritual life, Geert Groote, who founded the Brothers of the Common Life, and Thomas a Kempis, who is credited with writing the Imitation of Christ, were both from the Dutch Church. Assenting to a petition made by the Holy Roman Emperor, Conrad II and Bishop Heribert of Utrecht, Blessed Pope Eugene III, in the year 1145 A.D., granted the Cathedral Chapter of Utrecht the right to elect successors to the See in times of vacancy. This privilege was affirmed by the Fourth Council of the Lateran in 1215. The autonomous character of the Ancient Catholic Church in the Netherlands was further demonstrated when a second papal grant by Pope Leo X, Debitum Pastoralis, conceded to Philip of Burgundy, the 57th Bishop of Utrecht, that neither he nor any of his successors, nor any of their clergy or laity, should ever, in the first instance, have his cause evoked to an external tribunal, not even under pretense of any apostolic letters whatever; and all such proceedings should be, ipso facto, null and void. This papal concession, in 1520, was of the greatest importance in the defense of the rights of the Church of Utrecht.

In the United States after the Revolutionary War it has usually been called Episcopalian. When Henry VIII split with Rome in the 16 th century the Church of England kept its already existing structure, with bishops, clergy, church buildings, and congregations being placed under the archbishop of Canterbury. The Church of England retained its traditional doctrine, liturgy, and organization. Not until Edward VII, Elizabeth I, and Oliver Cromwell did greater changes come in. The Church of England turned from Protestant under Edward to Catholic under Mary. Elizabeth adopted a middle ground, seeking to blend both Catholic and Protestant elements. The Protestant character can be seen in the rejection of the concept of Purgatory, the discontinuation of the use of indulgences and relics, and the use of English rather than Latin for worship. Elizabeth retained the traditional episcopal structure even though it was controversial. Many English Puritans also objected to ordained priests. Anglican doctrine on the church shifted from an emphasis on the bishop to the Calvinist emphasis on the congregation. The Book of Common Prayer affirms that the Church exists where the Word of God is preached, the sacraments are duly administered, and the faithful are gathered.

However, if one looks at marriage today, one finds a horrendous divorce rate among not only Catholics but across the religious spectrum. Marriage itself is a threat to its own existence and is not affected at all by the movement to legalize same-sex marriage. How does allowing more people to wed endanger a failing institution? Should not the church be searching for ways to encourage two people to promise themselves to each other for life, and then to remain together? Should not the church be addressing massive adultery that takes place in these marriages? While thus raising his awareness to see divine life in all of Gods creation and creatures, it yet aids him to attach proper values to everything in existence in the universe. Seen in this light, material means have their place and are necessary; but their utilization rather than their acquisition deserves primary attention. An obvious expression of such a philosophy of life is found in mans affinity for all Nature, a sign of a mature love and heartfelt respect for Gods creation. In the effort to understand even more fully Natures ways, man is helped by an eager intellect that directs his studies and interests toward the divine. Truth, being what it is to each person, enlightens him in-creasingly as his intuitive faculties unfold. Eventually he will know God first hand.

Extractions: Religion I was reared Catholic, which was probably inevitable since my mother was French and my father was Irish-American. I still attend church services regularly. This sometimes surprises folks who know me principally for my salty language (especially while I'm debugging a program!) or my deep interest in science , especially astronomy I have never felt there was any conflict between science and religion. Each addresses different types of questions. I see them as complementary. Perhaps I adopted this viewpoint because I knew so many scholarly clergymen as a youngster, or perhaps I was influenced by meeting top-flight scientists who were devout Catholics, such as nobel laureate Sir John Eccles. Besides, contrary to what many folks seem to believe, we Irish Catholics in the States are quite liberal-minded about Catholicism. We're good at poking fun at the Church, at the clergy, and at ourselves. I believe Christians should consider very seriously Saint Augustine on Science and Scripture . His warning from 1,600 years ago speaks directly to modern pseudo-conflicts between science and religion such as that of Creationism.

For would not the pious psalmist [92:4] in vain declare that he was made glad through the work of the Lord and rejoiced in the works of His hands, if we were not drawn to the contemplation of the highest good by this means?1 The eminent historian, Georges Minois, speaks for many when he argues that the condemnation of Galileo, "consecrated" a "great divorce" between science and the Church.2 If we grant that the nuptial analogy is apt, then truly we can say that John Paul's work is an attempt to reconcile old lovers. John Paul firmly proclaims the Catholic insight that if science and faith could live together harmoniously in the hearts of Copernicus and Galileo, then, in principle, they should be able to do so in the hearts of all scientists; and thus, there is no need for any divorce between science and faith. The God of creation is the God of revelation and redemption. John Paul's project, therefore, has been something akin to marriage counseling.
