Its name is derived from the fact that it promised salvation through a secret knowledge or understanding of reality possessed by its devotees. Previously known mostly from the writings of its Christian opponents, gnosticism can now be studied in a collection of original documents found near the Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi in 1945. Despite the complex diversity of Gnostic groups and their teachings, the basic doctrines of gnosticism formed an identifiable pattern of belief and practice. The article is used with permission from the July/August 1995 issue of Modern Reformation. We do not have to look very far to see the influence of this movement on 19-century Protestantism. The revivalistic evangelicals wanted to escape from this world by a personal experience of being born again, and successive experiences: A second blessing or a rededication would revive the soul in its flight toward Deity and full surrender. Doctrine was considered an encumbrance, as were creeds, liturgies and sacraments, and the anti-intellectual strain of Gnosticism reared its ugly head. In orthodox Christianity, grace redeems this world; in Gnosticism, it redeems the self from nature. Grace did not save nature, but provided a way of escape. At the same time, "the liberals," according to Philip Lee, "made ample room for nature on their stage by moving grace into the wings. There remained in both camps a gnostic separation of Creation from Redemption" (p. 93). In spite of their rivalry, fundamentalism and liberalism "both essentially proclaim a Christ who does not redeem," but merely reveals, according to Lee (p. 107). All of these writers point to the breakdown in the Reformation's orthodox stance in both conservative and liberal camps as opening the door to Transcendentalism and, finally, to the current orientation. Beyond the liberal-evangelical split, Wade Clark Roof now says we cannot discern any real differences between New Age and evangelical spirituality on a number of counts. This new Gnosticism "celebrates experience rather than doctrine; the personal rather than the institutional; the mythic and dreamlike over the cognitive; people's religion over official religion; soft, caring images of deity over hard, impersonal images; the feminine and the androgynous over the masculine" (Roof, p. 132). Although Roof does not make the point, these are clearly the tenets of ancient Gnosticism.

The reason for this is that there are very few exhibits of first hand copies of their writings. These writings were burned by the orthodox Christians from the first century onward. Gnosticism was considered heretical and Gnostics heretics. So, until the find of Nag Hammadi in 1945 little was known of Gnosticism and the Gnostics except from the writings of their adversaries. One of the main things which separated the Gnostics from orthodox Christians was the mysticism of their beliefs. It began with their views of God and creation. They viewed the One which they called the true God as having a feminine part which was the Spirit. In accord, they also held that Jesus came from God and the Spirit to form the Trinity. Also, the Gnostic differed with the orthodox Christians on two other major issues: the salvation of man and the person of Jesus. They disagreed with the theory that man was sinful by nature, but believed man erred through ignorance; by knowledge man could correct his ways and gain salvation. The special knowledge which the Gnostics subscribed to was known as "gnois." Gnois was not a logical type of knowledge as one might gain in the study of mathematics or chemistry, but it was an intuitive or reflexive type of knowledge which comes from the study of man's inner self or soul. Any other knowledge did not concern the Gnostics. They called this gnois illuminated Logos because they believed it led to man's salvation.

Mysticism, Gnosticism and the Jewish Kabbalah are all very similar. Their path to God is to look for God within ourselves. If we take the view that God is within everything, that nature and the universe is the very embodiment of God, then our own inner Self is the most accessible point for experiencing an all-pervading Supreme Reality. This Gnostic view is powerfully presented by Jesus in Luke 17:20-21: And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! , lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you . Luke 17:20-21, KJV The word “within” as it appears in the King James Bible has been translated in some modern bibles as “among.” These interpreters believe Jesus intended to say he himself was among them. However, this does not tally with preceding statements in the passage. Jesus says the kingdom of God cannot be observed. Therefore, Jesus could not have been talking about himself. He was observable. Jesus says the kingdom of God is not a place. It is neither “here” nor “there”. Thus Jesus could not have been referring to himself. We must take all physical descriptions of the kingdom, such as streets paved with gold and pearly gates, as metaphors because these things can be “observed.”

The four gospels are only four out of dozens that were whittled down by the formation of the church canon, and by censorship and physical destruction of rival texts. With no authoritative statements from Jesus himself, the field lay wide open for a dizzying range of interpretations. The first centuries of Christianity saw a luxuriant flowering of sects which all used the name of Christ, but differed dramatically in their teachings and practice.     Extractions: Like Christianity or the Jesus Movement, Buddhism took many forms. In the early Christian centuries, there was a vigorous development in Buddhist thought and visual imagery among Northern Buddhists (Mahayana, or Great Vehicle) in the empire of the Kushans the land of five rivers, what we know today as Punjab and Afghanistan. That region became known as a second Holy Land of Buddhism. Chinese Buddhist monks were content to study among its myriad monasteries, without pressing on to the original homeland of Buddhists further east along the Ganges. The Northern Buddhists moved from a religious outlook that had regarded escape from attachment to this world as open only to dedicated holy men, to a view that made the escape a possibility for others. The idea of the bodhisattva one who is capable of achieving enlightenment but chooses, out of compassion, to remain active in this world and work for the salvation of all sentient beings became more widespread. Buddhism became in this form a popular religion, with a pantheon of gods and goddesses. An amazingly rich culture of sermons in stone burgeoned. At a more esoteric level, a distinctive school known as the Madyamika the Middle Way is found in this period. The "Middle" Way has nothing to do with the golden mean of the Greeks, or with finding a middle path of compromise between opposite views. Rather, it recognizes that no system of intellectual inquiry such as notions of materialism or idealism, of free will or necessity can lead to the ultimate truth. There are two levels of truth. Logic and discursive reasoning are necessary to deal with this world, but the really real must be found beyond their reach. Between and beyond two poles of thought useful in the workaday world is a superior intuition that lets one glimpse that reality. Truth is to be found above the paradoxes. Dogma is rejected.

For in medieval alchemy we have the long-sought connecting link between Gnosis (i.e. of the Gnostics) and the processes of the collective unconscious that can be observed in modern man..."(24) Dr. Richard Noll comments that "the divinatory methods of the I Ching, used often by Jung in the 1920s and 1930s, were a part of the initial training program of the C.G. Jung Institute of Zurich in 1948, and its use is widely advocated today in Jungian Analytic-Training Institutes throughout the world."(25)
