Extractions: Foreword: This sermon was prepared while Dr. Alva J. McClain was the pastor of the First Brethren Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Several young men of that church were urged by friends to enter the Masonic lodge and they came to Dr. McClain for counsel in the matter. As the outcome of a conference with them he promised to make a fair investigation of the organization on the basis of such Masonic literature as might be available to the general public, and to report his findings in the form of a sermon to the congregation. Following the delivery of the sermon to a large audience, a number of interested friends made provision for its publication requesting that it be printed as delivered with as little change as possible. This will explain the conversational manner. This booklet has had wide circulation, having gone through six printings. In order to make the documentation up to date, the references in the Encyclopedia of Freemasonry were taken from the "New and Revised Edition" published by the Masonic History company in 1929.

Pike, in his Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry tells us that "Every Masonic Lodge is a temple of religion; and its teachings are instruction in religion." (p. 213) "Masonry, around whose altars the Christian, the Hebrew, the Moslem, the Brahim, the followers of Confucius and Zoroaster, can assemble as brethren and unite in prayer to the one God who is above all the Baalism." (p. 226) "Masonry, like all religions, all the Mysteries, conceals its secrets from all except the Adepts and Sages or Elect and uses false explanations and interpretations of its symbols to mislead those who deserve only to be misled." (p. 105 )

Extractions: I n 1957 Ray A. Neff of Gibbsboro, New Jersey, walked into Leary's ookshop in Philadelphia and purchased a faded, second-hand book for fifty cents. Unbeknownst to Neff, inside that dusty military journal was a profound and stunning confession from the grave of a Union General and traitor, Lafayette Baker. Booth was not alone, and according to Gen Baker, did indeed survive. And as late as 1977, the FBI, did in fact investigate the issue of JOHN WILKES BOOTH and his possible survival. Recently the Bureau released 184 pages in PDF format, Booth 1 Booth 2 Booth 3 Booth 4 . According to the FBI, "These records contain correspondence dated 1922-23 of William J. Burns, former Director of the Bureau of Investigation, concerning a theory that Booth lived many years after the assassination of President Lincoln. Also included are the results of a 1948 examination by the FBI Laboratory of a boot said to be worn by Booth on the night of the assassination and a 1977 examination of a diary belonging to Booth." On January 23, 1923, William J. Burns, by then the acting director of the Department of Justice wrote "I have gone over with considerable interest the volume entitled "The Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth" by Finis L. Bates of Memphis, Tennessee...The work contains very strong evidence in support of the old belief that Booth did escape and live many years after the assassination of President Lincoln..." (

During the struggle of conviction of sin through which I passed, I do not recollect that the question of Freemasonry ever occurred to my mind. But soon after my conversion, the evening came for attendance upon the Lodge, and I went. They, of course, were aware that I had become a Christian and the Master called upon me to open the Lodge with prayer. I did so, and poured out my heart to the Lord for blessings upon the Lodge. I observed that it created considerable excitement. The evening passed away, and at the close of the Lodge I was asked to pray again. I did so, and retired much depressed in spirit. I soon found that I was completely converted from Freemasonry to Christ, and that I could have no fellowship with any of the proceedings of the Lodge. Its oaths appeared to me to be monstrously profane and barbarous. At that time I did not know how much I had been imposed upon by many of the pretensions of Masonry. But, upon reflection and examination, a severe struggle and earnest prayer, I found I could not consistently remain with them. My new life instinctively and irresistibly recoiled from any fellowship with what I now regarded as "the unfruitful works of darkness."

Fringe Masonry encompasses those regular freemasons whose interest in mysticism and the occult led them to such organizations as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (HOGD) and the Ordo Templi Orientis . Neither of these organizations was ever recognized by any regular masonic body. The Golden Dawn had no masonic pretensions but the fact that the founders of the OTO made such claims opened it to accusations of being clandestine or irregular Freemasonry. Since 1919 ( Equinox Vol. III, No. 1) they ceased to claim being or having any authority regarding Freemasonry. Currently most masonic Grand Lodge jurisdictions are unaware of, or indifferent to, the existence or history of the OTO.
