The General Board's Emergency Response/Service Ministries office activated Child Care in Aviation Incident Response (CAIR) teams, calling them to the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Md., for orientation. Team members were coming in by car from a variety of locations as far away as Nebraska. ER/SM manager Stan Noffsinger said he expected some teams to be taken by van to New York Thursday or Friday. They will go to yet-to-be-named locations in the city, which saw its World Trade Center twin towers flattened Tuesday when hijacked planes flew into them. Two churches in Atlantic Northeast District, which includes New York, were helping to find drivers. In addition, a $25,000 grant from the General Board's Emergency Disaster Fund was approved to assist with the CAIR teams, Disaster Child Care, and emergency response volunteers, as needed. It will also support Church World Service Emergency Response efforts.

Extractions: Brief History of the Church of the Brethren Eighteenth century Europe was a time of strong governmental control of the church and low tolerance for religious diversity. Nevertheless, there were religious dissenters who lived their faith in spite of the threat of persecution. Some of these dissenters found refuge in the town of Schwarzenau, Germany. Among them was Alexander Mack, a miller who had been influenced by both Pietism and Anabaptism. In August 1708 five men and three women gathered at the Eder River in Schwarzenau for baptism, an illegal act since all had been baptized as infants. They understood this baptism as an outward symbol of their new faith and as a commitment to living that faith in community. An anonymous member of the group first baptized Mack. He, in turn, baptized the other seven. This new group simply called themselves "brethren." Though the early Brethren shared many beliefs with other Protestants, issues which separated them from the state churches included discipleship and obedience, reinstitution of the New Testament church, church discipline, biblicism, and nonresistance. They also shared their faith enthusiastically with others, sending evangelists to other parts of Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Due to growing persecution and economic hardship, Brethren began emigrating to North America in 1719 under the leadership of Peter Becker. Most Brethren left Europe by 1740, including Mack, who brought a group over in 1729. The first congregation in the New World was organized at Germantown, Pa., in 1723. Soon after its formation, the Germantown congregation sent missionaries to rural areas around Philadelphia. These missionaries preached, baptized, and started new congregations.

Driving directions to the cemetery from Wenatchee, Chelan County, Washington: Take US 2 and 97 west from North Wenatchee Avenue after crossing the Wenatchee River Bridge, proceed west to the top of the hill and take a right turn onto School Street. Proceed to the stop sign at the Old Highway and continue one block to the cemetery on the left at Knowles Road. Off street parking and the cemetery entrance are on Knowles Road. A physical inventory was taken in Oct 1998 by Kay Law Livermore and Elma Law Rasmussen and was updated in Nov 1999 by Kay Livermore, Frank Neher and Lisa Robinson. Additional information was furnished by Dennis Roth, Church of the Brethren Historian, obituaries extracted by Kay Livermore. June Stutzman, cemetery sexton, furnished records and plot maps. Approximately 1, 000 burials have been made since the first one in fall of 1902. History: In the fall of 1902 Arthur Gunn, who owned a large part of the Sunnyslope property, persuaded Rev. Amos Benjamin Peters to make a second trip to the Wenatchee Valley for the purpose of forming a settlement at Sunnyslope. Rev. Peters, elder of the Church of the Brethren, located near Cando, North Dakota, was accompanied by several men from the congregation. They purchased land for themselves and took out options on property for their friends. Rev. A. B. Peters, his family, and other first settlers of Sunnyslope, arrived in Wenatchee by train on 31 Dec 1902.

From Long Green, drive east on Long Green Road. Turn right or south at the junction with Kanes Rd. The cemetery will be on the right or west side of the road in about 250 yards. Cemetery is located across the road from 4800 Long Green Road. The original church is gone, but a new church has been built across the road from the cemetery, which is owned and maintained by the Long Green Church of the Brethren. A board of directors governs the cemetery and has since the first church was built in 1908. This is a complete listing of the stones in this very clean, spacious cemetery. In the Eder Valley, near Schwargenau, Germany in the spring of 1708, Alexander Mack along with seven others, began a movement which evolved into what is known today as "The Church of The Brethren". In 1719, Mack, with his numerous followers, fled from Europe to America. The colony which they established in Germantown, Pennsylvania was the beginning of the "Dunkards" in America. We must remember the people called "Dunkards". who first came to the area were clannish, German speaking and for many years held themselves apart from their neighbors. They were hard working, industrious people and as a whole, excellent farmers. They sought only enough land to supply their needs. They sought neither wealth nor social prestige. They were not interested in political office and certainly they were not desirous of any type of military honor. When the Shenandoah Valley was first settled the Germans heavily populated the upper portion.
