It was founded by the 4th Earl Marischal and developed around the harbour at Keith Inch in 1587. By 1680 Peterhead had become one of the largest fishing ports on the north coast. May the search after truth spread more, for there is no doubt that an accurate knowledge of the Catholic Religion, drawn from its own, and not from extraneous, sources, will clear away many prejudices.

Extractions: THE REFORMATION IN SCOTLAND In 1560 the Scottish Parliament adopted a Reformed confession of faith, known as the Scot's Confession, for the nation. They also passed anti-Catholic laws inflicting capital punishment on those who dared to celebrate mass three times or more. Throughout the nation Reformed theology and the Presbyterian system of church government, i.e., congregational election of pastors and elders, superseded the appointment system of bishops. Larger geographical areas were organized into presbyteries where ruling and teaching elders gathered as an assembly to vote on church concerns. A general assembly of elders covering the nation of Scotland was also established and met when there were issues confronting the presbyteries as a whole. For a period of time a patronage system in which wealthy land owners or politicians hired their own pastors competed with congregational calls of pastors. This was not received well by those of Presbyterian conviction and eventually faded out of practice. The thoroughly democratic republican style of Presbyterian government was stamped indelibly on the consciences of the Scottish people, making them a bridgehead for representative government wherever, in the future, they should migrate.

We are part of the North of Scotland Mission Circuit which covers several churches on the coast: Portgordon, Buckie , Banff, Portessie, Findochty, Cullen , Whitehills, Peterhead and Cruden Bay. This means that we cover a range of 70 miles, making us the largest Methodist circuit in Britain. There are 3 other full-time ministers in the circuit, one of whom, Rev. Christopher Mabb has his own Methodist web site . Many of the church services are conducted by retired ministers, ministers employed at Aberdeen University and lay preachers. To find out who is preaching this week, please see 'The Plan' Sunday Services are at 11am and 6:30pm , and the morning worship is preceded by the "Sunday at Ten" Bible study, discussion group and choir. Sunday School and creche are features of our morning service. Through Aberdeen's links with both the oil industry and education, you will always find people from far corners of the world worshipping with us. Z The Priory of Saint Andrews priory was one of the great religious houses in Scotland and the metropolitan church in that country before the Reformation. Its origin is uncertain, although all agree that it must be very ancient. According to the "Registrum S. Andreae", the first founder was Angus, King of the (Picts 735-747), who gave to Bishop Regulus, who had brought to Scotland the relics of St. Andrew, meadows, fields, and other properties. The church was, perhaps from the beginning, administered by Culdees, who also had the right of electing the bishop. In 1144, however, at the request of King Alexander I, who may be called the second founder of the priory on account of his many donations to it, Robert, Prior of Scone, was made Bishop of St. Andrews. He brought with him some of his brother-canons regular whom he established in the priory. For some time the canons and the Culdees served the church together, but by order of the pope in 1147 the Culdees, who had previously been given the option to become canons and had refused, were removed and all their rights passed to the canons who from that moment till the Reformation formed the Cathedral Chapter. When in 1297 Bishop Lamberton, who succeeded Bishop Fraser, was chosen by the canons without the intervention of the Culdees, as was done in the two previous elections, Cumyn, Provost of the Culdees, opposed the election and went to Rome. He pleaded his case before the pope in vain, and Lamberton was consecrated bishop in 1298. The Culdees, after this, disappear from St. Andrews altogether. The priory protected by bishops, kings, and noble families prospered, and like all the great monasteries it had cells or privies as its dependencies. These were: (1) Lochleven, formerly a house of Culdees, and given to the canons by Bishop Robert and King David; (2) Monymusk, where the Culdees became canons regular; (3) Isle of May, which Bishop Wishart bought from the monks of Reading and gave to the canons of St. Andrews
