In a heated election that divided the church for months, Bishop Gilbert E. Patterson-representing a significant move away from traditional leadership-unseated incumbent Bishop Chandler David Owens in a vote yesterday at COGIC’s Holy Convocation in Memphis. Patterson, pastor of Temple of Deliverance COGIC in Memphis, the city that is also home to denominational headquarters, pledged to "bring the general [governing] board back into its rightful position"-an unmistakable reference to the diminished role the board played during Owens’ four years at the helm. Patterson added that he planned to expand the denomination’s media visibility through international radio and television programming designed to keep his constituency informed and to "expose the world to the great preachers, both male and female, in the Church of God in Christ." In his concession speech, Owens-who lost to Patterson by a vote of 2,619 to 1,786-promised to "do nothing-that’s capital n-o-t-h- i-n-g-to block his [Patterson’s] progress." Owens, whose home church is Greater Community COGIC in Atlanta, edged out Patterson by one vote in the election for presiding bishop in 1996.
