The structure was named after local merchant William Alexander, who provided significant funds to build the chapel. In December 1896, a Bonavista carpenter named Ryder began work on the project; free labour was provided by the congregation. In January 1897 Ronald Strathie, at a cost of $0.15 per hour, replaced Mr. Ryder as overseer of the project. The chapel was built from locally cut pine and displayed a Gothic style with arched windows. The completed structure had a capacity of between 75 and 100 people. The interior is especially fine with a hammerbeam roof. Traditionally, only men attended funeral services; these occasions were perceived as too much for women to endure. The chapel is not longer a part of regular Anglican service in Bonavista; however, yearly flower services are still held. The building is open from mid-June to mid-September for visitors. The entrance to the graveyard features the remains of the original lych gate. Originally this was a structure with steep gable-roof, but the roof has been removed, and only the corner posts remain. The lych gate was used during the funeral ceremony. As the procession arrived at the graveyard, the pall-bearers would stop the coffin under the gate, where additional prayers were said before they moved into the graveyard proper. The word "lych" is derived from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning "corpse". With the advent of modern funeral homes, the use of the lych gate declined, and the Bonavista Mortuary Chapel may have the only remaining lych gate in the province.

Church parishes were usually the manor villages. The parish priest was appointed by the lord of the manor and was given a house. He was obliged to carry money for alms with him, keep up the church, and provide hospitality to travellers. Priestly Duties. The priest was usually a commoner by birth, though serfs were tied to the land and were not allowed to become priests. The priest officiated at church services, weddings, baptisms, funerals, and visited the ill. He earned his living from the income for parish lands, fees for services, and tithe money.

     Extractions: There is a long-standing choral tradition at St Peters, developed by men such as Vincent Trivett (Organist 1909-1947) and Kendrick Partington (Organist 1957-1994). We try to maintain a good "parish church" standard, and sing a wide range of accompanied and a capella church music: from Byrd and Gibbons to Howells and Leighton, by way of Mozart, Brahms, and the Victorian stalwarts such as Stainer and Stanford. We are fortunate to have the wholehearted support of the Rector in our attempt to maintain this tradition. Sung services We sing a full Choral Evensong on the second Sunday of each month, with the versicles and responses and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis sung to a composed setting. On the fourth Sunday of the month there is a Ferial Evensong, when the responses are sung to the ferial setting as used at Southwell Minster, and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are sung to Anglican chant. Except on certain feast days, the morning service on the first Sunday of the month is Matins, when at least one of the canticles (Te Deum, Jubilate Deo, Benedicite) is sung to a composed setting. At all these services and at the sung Holy Communion (on all Sunday mornings except the first) we sing an anthem. The Director of Music The role of the choirmaster is crucial for a successful choir, and not an easy one to fulfill. While teaching and maintaining a good standard of discipline and musicianship, he must also motivate, encourage and occasionally cajole the members of what is only a voluntary choir. Following Andrew Teague's move to Bradford Cathedral in March 2003, we are delighted to have appointed Philip Collin as our new Director of Music. Philip was organ scholar at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and has previously held two choirmaster posts at local churches.
