Extractions: Collectible price: Average review score: Great! This is a wonderful book! You learn so much, not to mention its fun! My only critism is the font "A Bard's Book of Pagan Songs: Stories and Music from the Celtic World" was printed in, its kinda hard to read. Makes your eyes hurt after a bit. But, other than that, I had no problems whatsoever with this book. I reccommend it to all pagans and anyone who wants to learn more about Celtic paganism's history. Fun and interesting This is definitely a "topic specific" book, but if it's the topic you're looking for then you're in for a treat. The author proceeds each musical score with a brief story about which the song is based. It's not cluttered with a lot of personal yarns. Very enjoyable. The CD is a great bonus! Suitable for after-rite Entertainment It was wonderful to hear the tales structured and set to music much like stories must have been presented in pre-literate times. The music even sounds like the old folk-song modes. Good CD to play while feasting after ritual and then good songs to play while the mead and ale are passed!

The book includes not only black and white pictures of the cards and their meanings, but also easy to read stories to help you remember what the cards mean. Some of the most popular tarot spreads are also included. Another book that is a good reference for spreads is Buckland's "Secrets of Gypsy Fortunetelling." When I first saw the pictures of the cards, I knew I had to have them. The cards are absolutely gorgeous and the two years it took to design them was well worth it. They are based mostly in Celtic Paganism and each card includes a place that was sacred to the Celts. The computer generation combined with photos create the most beautiful cards I have ever seen. Now anywhere I go, I get compliments on my cards.

Extractions: I know there are a great deal of people who hate this book. I dont know why! I am not a Llewellyn fan, because I feel that they rush anything into print, whether its written or researched well, as well as putting out books that dont even skim the surface of a subject. This book is the exception, and believe me, Ive read an extensive amount of books on Celtic myth and spirituality! So I at least have something to go on when I say that this book is a gem! Its well researched and so comprehensive, that you really dont even need any other book if you want to learn about Celtic magick. GRANTED, we really dont have a lot of information on what the Celts did or why, because they didnt write any of it down, and the Christians destroyed as much evidence as they could. BUT, this book does not claim to teach you THE way of Celtic spirituality. It gives the Wiccan/witch/Pagan a treasure trove of information on every possible subject so that you can add Celtic influences into your rites/philosophy. It is beautifully written, endlessly helpful and wonderfully practical.

Because everyone has their own "interpretation" of words instead of researching the actual definitions and researching the etymology of language. That's not a bad thing, but it's not really a good thing either. It's human nature to view all things in life from one's own perspective, but quite often, that's where we get into trouble. If people would simply acknowledge the need for common definitions, then it would be much easier to develop a common understanding, or perhaps even acceptance of varying views. The purpose for defined definitions is to develop that common language and understanding. Aristotle wrote many books of thought in his day. It's interesting to note that the first 8 of those books are based on defining words and what he means when he says this word or that word. Even then the great thinkers of our world, understood the deep importance of common meanings of words, even in 300BC. One of the other problems we face, is researching words based on their origin, meaning and, this is the important part, English translation. We get even further confused when a word is both English and an ancient dialect. Say for example neo-pagan. We'll get to this word later.

Extractions: to 'Celtic' Paganism Tina Deegan This article is designed to take a brief overview of the native religions in the lands traditionally considered Celtic (primarily designated so from the languages originally spoken there) within Northern Europe. When considering the nature of pre-Christian Celtic religions from the evidence available today, it should be remembered that the pre-Christian Celts of Europe and the British Isles had an oral culture and therefore there is no indigenous written evidence from the pagan period. The contemporary written evidence is mostly from the classical commentators, whose sources may be second-hand and whose primary purpose was not to write about the Celtic religions as such: Lucan in the first century AD wrote of the religion of Provincial Gaul as a part of the background of his account of Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul. There are stories of the pre-Christian deities written in Celtic lands, but these are from medieval tales compiled long after the Christianisation process and written down by Christian scribes and as such require a more cautious approach to the deities described, yet they should not be disregarded either due to their 'substantial continuity from pre-literate and pre-Christian tradition'. There is a wealth of artwork and stone carvings but unfortunately most of the pre-Christian religious inscriptions date from the Romano-Celtic period, when the Celtic lands and tribes had been incorporated into the Roman empire. This evidence shows clear elements of the absorption of Roman culture, such as the Roman style artwork (naturalistic human style figures for the deity with Roman style clothing) with native imagery (such as a wheel) and often the inclusion of a Roman god name with a Celtic epithet. Some Christians, especially fundamentalists, are terribly afraid that they might be right and want nothing to do with it if it is tainted by Pagan associations. But the vast majority who use the Celtic Cross are Christian and unconcerned that there is any controversy. All the historical examples of actual "Celtic Crosses" are from indisputably Christian contexts. The Aberlemno Stone in Angus, the great High Crosses at Clonmacnoise, Monasterboise, Kells, Iona and many other medieval monastic sites are all clearly made in Christian times, under Christian patronage and according to conventional Christian iconography. So where does this claim of paganism come from? Henry O'Neill, in his 1857 book Illustrations of the Most Interesting of the Sculptured Crosses of Ancient Ireland writes, "I think that ancient Irish art was pagan, and was continued during the Christian period, just as the peculiar form of the Irish cross is pagan, or as the names of the months, or of the days of the week are pagan; these, and a great deal more of paganism, having continued, owing to the tenacity with which a people retain their general habits and ideas." O'Neill was not himself pagan, as much of his writing contains a Christian piety that would refute such a suggestion. Rather he is expressing pride in a noble antiquity for Irish art. During the 19th century Celtic Revival, much was said and written about native cultural survivals from pre-Christian times. "Pre-Christian" would also be pre-Norman and pre-English domination. It must be remembered that at this time Ireland was reinventing itself. The trauma of famine and foreign rule was fresh. Many ancient Gaelic myths and legends were revived to serve the cause of a renewed sense of national identity and pride in the past.
