Cluster Analysis means to collect elements (i.e. pixels) of the same property (in this context this means: gray value) to a cluster. These clusters can be visualized by colorizing them or by reconstructing them to a grayscale picture. We are showing that a cluster analysis can be done directly on picture data (pixels) or on wavelet coefficients resulting from a wavelet analysis of the image. The clustered coefficients then are transformed back using the inverse wavelet tranform. The quality of this reconstruction depends on the used wavelet-transform

Gallagher Xiang-Gen Xia Publications Multipath ISI/ICI cancelation/equalization is one of the most important problems in communication systems. This research aims to develop new intersymbol interference (ISI) and interchannel interference (ICI) cancellation methods by using pre/post coding via nonmaximally decimated multirate filterbanks. It has been shown that any finite tap ISI that may have spectral-nulls charateristics (or frequency-selective fading that is very common in wireless communication enviroment) can be eliminated completely by using nonmaximally decimated FIR multirate filterbanks in pre/post coding. Moreover it has been shown that the precoding may be independent of the ISI channels and therefore feedback is not necessary. As a special case of the precoding scheme, a rate 1/N precoding is equivalent to a fractionally-spaced equalizer with N time faster sampling rate than the baud rate. In this research, we consider not only ISI but also channel random noise in communication systems as a whole. We combine the multirate filterbank pre/post coding for eliminating ISI and the traditional error protection coding for correcting random errors together to achieve a better peformance than the existing techniques. We also apply the pre/post coding technique to mitigate ICI in multiple user communication systems, such as wireless mobile communication systems.

It was defended in the Arenbergkasteel in Heverlee on Wednesday April 28, 1999. During the last decade, the wavelet transform has proven to be a valuable tool in many application fields. In this thesis we focus on two applications: image processing and compression to create low-dimensional models for dynamical systems. We worked out the details of integer wavelet transforms, based on the lifting scheme, for a class of biorthogonal wavelets (Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau). Based on this we designed and implemented a software library called WAILI (Wavelets with Integer Lifting) that provides wavelet transforms and wavelet-based image processing operations on two-dimensional images. Later we added support for very large images and block-based processing.

Links Introduction In signal analysis, there are a number of different functions one can perform on that signal in order to translate it into different forms that are more suitable for different applications. The most popular function is the Fourier transform that converts a signal from time versus amplitude to frequency versus amplitude. This transform is useful for many applications, but it is not based in time. To combat this problem, mathematicians came up with the short term Fourier transform which can convert a signal to frequency versus time. Unfortunately, this transform also has its shortcomings mostly that it cannot get decent resolutions for both high and low frequencies at the same time. So how can a signal be converted and manipulated while keeping resolution across the entire signal and still be based in time? This is where wavelets come into play. Wavelets are finite windows through which the signal can be viewed. In order to move the window about the length of the signal, the wavelets can be translated about time in addition to being compressed and widened. Unfortunately in order to understand the wavelets, you must understand linear algebra because wavelets make use of vector spaces and matrices quite a lot. Matrices are pretty straight forward and all their functions are covered by using Maple so I wont bother going over them, instead below I have written a brief introduction to the terms and functions of vectors spaces.

Extractions: This document describes and implements several of the most important functions in image processing: discrete wavelet transform, quantization, smoothing. I also propose adding noise to images as to remedy quantization artifacts. All the stuff here is based on the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau 9/7 wavelet filter, the standard transform in the JPEG-2000 standard. We implement it with an efficient lifting transformation. Of course, I did not follow the standard, but have attempted to simplify. The core idea of the ennoising strategy is to estimate the amount of quantization noise caused by the quantization in each subband, approximate it with a normally distributed random noise, and re-introduce it during decompression. The result can be seen in the image below. On the left, there is the compressed image, suffering from the blurring artifacts .
