Extractions: The principal objective of MAGNUMS research, led by Professor Tang , is to model the behavior of highspeed and high-power semiconductor devices. Recent work has been focused on bipolar transistors and heterostructure junction devices. The theoretical work includes derivation of a hydrodynamic transport model consistent with Monte Carlo data and the development of a new impact ionization model. Computational algorithms and adaptive grid structures relating to more accurate and stable discretization schemes are also investigated. Both the differential equation solver and the Monte Carlo particle simulators have been implemented on one HP and five DEC workstations. Numerical Analysis Facilities. The theoretical work and computational algorithms are implemented on both supercomputers and on a SUN workstation located in Room 17 of Marcus Hall. ecewebmaster@ecs.umass.edu

One of the main strengths of the group, and one for which it is internationally recognized, is in the solution of large sparse systems of linear equations, and of large-scale linear and nonlinear optimization problems. Members of the group are involved in many collaborative ventures overseas, including projects with Belgium, France, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, and the USA.
