Extractions: Traditionally, number theory is that branch of pure mathematics concerned with the properties of integers and contains many open problems that are easily understood even by non-mathematicians. More generally, the field has come to be concerned with a wider class of problems that arose naturally from the study of integers. Number theory may be subdivided into several fields according to the methods used and the questions investigated. See for example the list of number theory topics The term " arithmetic " is also used to refer to number theory. This is a somewhat older term, which is no longer as popular as it once was. Nevertheless, the term remains prevalent e.g. in the names of mathematical fields (arithmetic algebraic geometry and the arithmetic of elliptic curves and surfaces). This sense of the term arithmetic should not be confused with the branch of logic which studies arithmetic in the sense of formal systems. Extractions: A Computer Algebra System (CAS) is a kind of mathematical software that enables you to use a computer to manipulate mathematical expressions. A CAS has symbolics, numerics, graphics, programming, and typesetting capabilities, and usually also data import/export. CASs are used in many fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, computational biology, economics, and education. The TI-68k devices (TI-89, TI-92 Plus, and Voyage 200) are the most advanced calculators available today. Once you have learned a topic, you can use the TI-68k CAS to automate some or all of your work, so that you can concentrate on more advanced and/or abstract topics without worrying about calculational errors. The TI-68k are also invaluable when learning a topic, since they allow you to explore the topic in many ways. One problem with the TI-68k is that a lot of commonly used functions are not built-in. MathTools aims to bridge that gap, mainly in the area of mathematics. One of my goals in maintaining MathTools and its extensive documentation is to introduce people to the beauty of mathematics. MathTools mainly consists of TI-Basic functions, but there are also TI-Basic programs, math programs and utilities written in C, and a Flash application.

My favorite text (and one I've used since the first edition) is Kenneth Rosen's Elementary Number Theory and Its Applications . The lecture notes follow the book fairly closely in the order of the topics. A couple of differences worth noting: I'm using a backward recurrence due to S. P. Glasby for the Extended Euclidean Algorithm, and the proof of quadratic reciprocity is due to J. S. Frame. Glasby's backward recurrence is particularly good for hand (but not necessarily machine ) computation. The current edition of Rosen's book (the 4-th edition) has a few misprints, but is pretty good. The exercises continue to be excellent, and I like the brief biographies of mathematicians mentioned in the exposition. The elementary treatment of topics (no abstract algebra required) means that the course does not have heavy prerequisites; I can expect 1020 students when we offer it every other year. How do I view/print the notes?

By writing code in the form of Java applets, distributing code to users is as easy as getting them to view a web page, and they can execute your code at little or no risk to their own system, because of Java's built in security features. TenBlocks presents the multiplication table as a series of simple puzzles: for each multiplication problem, present it as a grid of squares of the corresponding height and width, and require the user to fill it in with blocks of ten squares of two basic shapes, until there are less than ten squares left unfilled. The hardest one seems to be 9 times 9, because you can only have one square left over when you are finished.
