    Extractions: On Monday August 22, over 80 mathematical scientists (including over 30 graduate students) answered PIms' invitation to attend the first PIms industrial problem solving workshop at UBC. The following problems were presented by six industrial scientists: Powertech Inc. Estimate the stress intensity of composite storage vessels. Such vessels are used, for example, for air in fire fighting equipment and for compressed gaseous fuels in natural gas or hydrogen vehicles. Petro-Canada Corp. Devise a minimally sensitive method for vertical seismic profiling. The current methods are too sensitive to small errors. MacMillian Bloedel Inc. Find the optimal placement of cuts in a log to optimize the total value of the resulting lumber. Even a 1 % improvement can mean an annual profit increase of $1M per mill. Kinetic Sciences Ltd. Develop an efficient algorithm for fingerprint identification that uses a new low cost light scanner. This would allow extremely small fingerprint security systems.

This interactive case study simulates the heat treatment process used at Key Knife, Inc., for the manufacture of steel chipper blades for the wood products industry. Additional materials include a virtual tour of the plant, an introduction to hardening and tempering, a review of statistics for statistical process control, and a user's guide. The simulation is intended for use by general students and technicians and not specifically for those studying metallurgy. The heat treating process serves only as a medium for the realistic use of statistics. The number of active manufacturing controls have been simplified to make the simulation easier to run. Factory Walk-through This portion offers a chance to virtually walk from the parking lot of the plant through reception and engineering to the manufacturing floor and the heat treating area. NOMINATION OF THE AWARD There are no restrictions on eligibility other than those specified in the Principal Guidelines. The prize committee is responsible for solicitation and evaluation of nominations. Nominations may be made by anyone, including members of the prize committee or by candidates themselves. It is the responsibility of the nominator to provide all relevant information to the prize committee, including a resume and documentation of the benefit to industry and the mathematical method used. The nomination for the award should be reported by the prize committee to the EMS president at least three months before the date of the award. The nomination for the award must be accompanied by a written justification and a citation of about 100 words that can be read at the award date. The prize is awarded to a single person or to a small group and cannot be split.

MPI is a problem solving workshop that attracts leading applied mathematicians and scientists from universities, industry, and national laboratories. The objective of the workshop is to foster interaction and collaboration between scientists and engineers working in industry and applied mathematicians at universities. The MPI Workshop is a lively, five-day interaction on problems of interest to science and industry. On the first day, the industry representatives present their problems to the whole group. These problems vary widely in nature from those requiring basic physical modeling to those requiring significant computation. For the rest of the week, the workshop participants break up into small working groups consisting of senior faculty and attending scientists, graduate students, and the industrial representatives, to discuss and tackle the problems in an informal setting. On the last day of the workshop, an academic representative from each group presents the results obtained and discusses possible future directions. A written report detailing the progress made during the workshop is prepared subsequently and sent to the industry representatives.

Some people believe that only gifted people can learn mathematics, that mathematics is only for boys, etc. But this article is concerned with myths in mathematics. The December 5, 1994, issue of Newsweek included an article titled, "No Ph.D.'s Need Apply." It discusses The Myth, which took hold in the 1980s, that the nation would face a shortage of scientists in the 1990s. Notices readers have seen several articles in 1994 and a recent February 1995 editorial on the Myth's practical impact on today's young mathematicians seeking career employment. A related myth in mathematics, which we hear every so often, goes something like this: "Jobs were tight in the early 1970s and then the market improved. It's a cyclic business and the market will get better again soon." Many of us no longer have faith in this myth, for reasons we will explain below, and we believe that mathematics departments should reconsider their missions. In particular, they should consider "downsizing" their graduate programs and re-examine the education provided in graduate school so that it more closely fits the reality of what our graduates will be doing in the future. Some group I universities, such as the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Michigan, have already started this process. Many long-term economic, political, academic, historical, and technical issues indicate that the current downturn in full-time tenured employment of new young mathematicians is not likely to be reversed in the next decade. Even though you are aware of them all individually, it may be useful to consider them in totality and ponder their impact on mathematics. Our purpose is to state our reasons for our views without claiming to own a crystal ball.
