Life Sciences Division Director Effective January 1, 2004, Barry Berven was appointed Operations Manager for the Biological and Environmental Sciences Directorate, reporting directly to Reinhold Mann. Dr. Berven joined ORNL in 1979 after receiving a Ph.D. in environmental health physics from Colorado State University. Since then he has served as a section head, associate division director, and subsequently as Director of the Health Sciences Research Division. Since 1997, he has served as the Operations Director for the Life Sciences Division. Dr. Berven is a resident of Oak Ridge. Thomas Klasson was appointed Group Leader of the Biochemical Engineering Research (BER) Group in ORNL's Life Sciences Division. Dr. Klasson is a Senior Biochemical Research Engineer in the BER Group. He earned his M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in 1988. Following an appointment at the University of Arkansas, he joined ORNL in 1992 in the former Chemical Technology Division where he served as a group leader from 1994-1999. His research in areas of bioprocessing and remediation has resulted in more than 75 publications. Dr. Klasson is a resident of Knoxville.

Such systems can cope well in adverse situations, being composed of relatively cheap robotic devices working in unison, capable of recovering from partial failure.

AI Technology top Problem top Whether they are spacecraft, probes or rovers, coordinating multiple distributed agents introduces unique challenges for automated planning and other supporting technology (Mataric 1995; Parker 1998). Issues arise concerning interfaces between agents, communication bandwidth, group command and control, and onboard capabilities. For example, a certain level of communication capabilities will need to be assigned to each, possibly limiting the amount of information that can be shared between the rovers (and ground). The mission design will need to include a "chain of command" for the team of spacecraft/rovers, indicating which rovers are controlled directly from the ground, and which are controlled by other rovers or orbiting/landed spacecraft. Finally, the onboard capabilities will need to be considered, including computing power and onboard data storage capacity. This will limit the level of autonomy each of the rovers can have. Impact top While it is up to mission designers to determine the optimal number of rovers for a given mission, multiple rovers have three types of advantages over single rover approaches: force multiplication, simultaneous presence and system redundancy.

Information can be found here The DESIRE research programme focusses on the study of compositional multi-agent systems for complex (and often distributed) tasks and development methods for these systems. Such systems model and support users in coordinating and performing complex cooperative tasks (e.g., design projects, distributed process control). In this research programme the agent metaphor has been adopted as a point of departure: a complex task can be modelled as a composition of a number of tasks, each of which is performed by one or more agents; these agents can have the form of automated systems or human agents (users). To support the development of such systems a framework is required that necessarily supports all phases of development: task and knowledge analysis (including requirements analysis and conceptual modelling), formal specification, operationalisation, verification and validation. A major aim is to provide a modelling framework for the development of such compositional multi-agent systems at a high conceptual level, supported by a software environment.
