I can think of things he did as President that were good and bad, but I think it was his surety that made me decide that being a Republican was the right thing to do when I was able to start voting. My viewpoints have changed, or maybe more accurately, the Republican viewpoint has changed enough that I don't find it palatable anymore. That's neither here nor there though. I'm sure that like what happened when Nixon died, those on the rabid Left will start dancing on his grave. That's a shame. Reagan was human, just like the rest of us, and he knew what he believed in, and he acted on it. Whether it was "right" is always subject to debate. He apparently had something people wanted. If I recall correctly, during the 1984 Presidential election, he grabbed 49 states. I'd call that a mandate. But that's the past, and we're here in the Now. He's dead, after officially suffering Alzheimers for 10 years. That's the worst way to go, in my opinion. I'm glad that he's no longer suffering, and I wish the kindest graces to his family in the days ahead as they have to start their lives without Ron. Godspeed, Mr. President.

The premise: Bridges are normally built on-time, on-budget, and do not fall down. On the other hand, software never comes in on-time or on-budget. In addition, it always breaks down. (Nevertheless, bridge building did not always have such a stellar record. Many bridge building projects overshot their estimates, time frames, and some even fell down.) One of the biggest reasons bridges come in on-time, on-budget and do not fall down is because of the extreme detail of design. The design is frozen and the contractor has little flexibility in changing the specifications. However, in today's fast moving business environment, a frozen design does not accommodate changes in the business practices. Therefore a more flexible model must be used. This could be and has been used as a rationale for development failure. But there is another difference between software failures and bridge failures, beside 3,000 years of experience. When a bridge falls down, it is investigated and a report is written on the cause of the failure. This is not so in the computer industry where failures are covered up, ignored, and/or rationalized. As a result, we keep making the same mistakes over and over again.
