It offers a vivid and eye-opening explanation of how much of psychology echoes Christianitybecause it not only borrows, but simultaneously erodes, some of that faith's foundational tenets. In fact, it is ironic, Kilpatrick notes, that "the wholesale importation of psychological ideas into Christianity would not have occurred if psychology did not have a Christian tone and appearance." Kilpatrick, who is a psychologist himself, isn't suggesting that his profession simply be thrown away. There is much that is useful in it, he says. However, "wheat and weeds have grown up together." Along with psychology's very respectable work, "there is also adrift in the psychology community an abundance of speculation, wishful thinking, contradictory ideas, doubletalk, and ideology disguised as science." And it is because psychology looks so much like Christianity that many Christian educators, pastors and thinkers have opened their doors to its ideas in order to make their faiths more relevant to contemporary culture.

With a focus on what makes human beings uniquely human and using psychology to deal with the real problems of human life, Humanistic Psychology steered away from the abnormal and mechanistic philosophies of the day and concentrated on a fuller concept of what it means to be human. Building from the “first Force”, or Behaviorism, and the “second Force”, Psychoanalysis, Humanistic Psychology attempted to study essentially human phenomena such as love, self-consciousness, self-determination, personal freedom, greed, lust for power, cruelty, and morality. Most importantly, Humanistic Psychology began to break down the societal stigmas attached to “therapy” and to open the benefits of the science of psychology to relatively healthy people who are interested in exploring the farther reaches of human potential. In 1964, three years after the Journal of Humanistic Psychology first appeared, the first invitational conference of Humanistic Psychology was held at old Saybrook, Connecticut. There, Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, Rollo May and other notable psychologists critiqued the shortcomings of “The First and Second Forces” of psychology.

He simply could no longer explain the totality of human experience through stimulus-response methods. However, it is Carl Rogers who probably advanced the cause of humanistic psychology the furthest. His client-centered therapy and person-centered psychology demonstrated the extent of the differences between humanistic psychology and both behavioral and psychodynamic approaches to personality. His optimistic outlook on the human condition, combined with his belief in humans as rational creatures beset by irrational needs characterized his views. Coming to understand the power of those irrational needs on one's behavior was the effort of humanistic therapy. In general, humanistic psychologists attempt to delve deeply into the lives and minds of their clients. Their methods are unlike those of other personality theorist and are often described as phenomenological. Another way to characterize humanistic psychology is through its emphasis on the self. Thus, constructs like: self-concept, self-esteem, and self-image are part of their vocabulary. First, there would be those who basically followed in his footsteps, like his daugher Anna Freud and her student Erik Erikson, and others who would develop theories not unlike Freud's, such as Carl Jung. Second, there were the Behaviorists like Pavlov and Skinner, who took the point of view that personality was nothing more than the sum total of all our habits. And third, there were many psychologists who fit in neither the Freudian nor the Behaviorist camps, but developed theories that emphasized things like consciousness, free will, social concern, and creativity. In this chapter, we will look at three of those psychologists and their theories: Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology, Existential Psychology as represented by Ludwig Binswanger, and Humanistic Psychology, as represented by Carl Rogers. Alfred Adler Freud had a hard time getting along with his more independent minded colleagues, several of whom left his circle. Over time, these colleagues developed their own theories and therapies, had their own circles and students, and went on to contribute to the field. One of the most influential was Alfred Adler.
