Extractions: And what a player he was. An absolute master of the dauntingly intricate Piedmont style of finger picking, John could simultaneously supply a bass pattern (with his thumb), maintain rhythmical accompaniment, and select individual notes to carry the melodyall within a tight harmonic structure. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, his longtime agent and, I might add, guardian angel, Trish Byerly, presented him with a custom hand made (by the noted Ron Phillips, the California equivalent of Maryland's master craftsman, Paul Reed Smith), fourteen fret, replica steel National guitar, which he proceeded to pick up without a moment's hesitation and regale the customers in the basement European-style coffee shop of Nordstrom's department store in Fairfax, VA. This impromptu concert attracted a swarm of curious passersby with incredulous stares as if they were collectively asking "who was that masked man?" And all the while John was matter of factly performing the difficult task of open tuning between each number (adjusting for individual key changes), which was just another piece of cake to him. It's no wonder then that he was regarded as a national treasure in the folk/blues community. But John's greatness extended beyond his music. A paradox of vulnerability and inner strength, he was a humble yet dignified man, a man of principles. In fact, a label of paragon of decency in his case would not be an exaggeration and he remained so throughout his life in a business that was not always on the up and up. "I'd go so far as to claim he was the spiritual leader of his generation," said his agent, Trish.

Extractions: UCF's Closer Than Ever an Excellent Achievement Last fall, the University of Central Florida's Conservatory Theatre MFA Musical Theatre students presented Jason Robert Brown's Songs for a New World . While that production was quite nicely directed and featured some very special moments (primarily by a stunning Anita Endsley), that material seemed a bit too taxing on the performers, resulting in a less than wonderful night at the theatre. However, in their more recent staging of Maltby and Shire's Closer Than Ever , the cast is more suited to the material, and they perform it beautifully and with great understanding. Closer Than Ever is essentially a revue. Richard Maltby, Jr. (Lyrics) and David Shire's (Music) songs are the catalogue for a frank spotlight on our lives and loves, relationships and fantasies, as performed by "characters" approaching middle age. Directed here by John Bell, the only major qualm this reviewer has is the fact that a few of the actors cast here are simply too young. But, thankfully, the actors make the material their own, and the songs are universal enough to be understood by people of all ages. Each member of this cast is dynamite at one or more points throughout the show. Jeanelle Henderson is hilarious and energetic in numbers like "You Wanna Be My Friend" and "Miss Byrd," while Mark Catlett is outstanding with his second act ballad "Patterns." Two performances make this production what it is: Andy Brown and Anita Endsley are incomparable, both vocally and dramatically. Brown's vocal work is stunning, and his "If I Sing" is a powerful moment, performed with intelligent passion and lovely tenderness. Endsley continues to showcase herself as a consummate musical theatre actress, performing this production's "Life Story" with a gorgeous soprano voice and her heart tacked perfectly on her sleeve.

Extractions: New! See photos of me from years ago I was born in Hull in the north east of England and moved to Harrow North West London where I received my high school and musical education. I won a scholarship to Trinity College of Music where I studied piano and composition on Saturdays. In 1968 I went to the University of Sussex near Brighton to study for a BSc degree in Electronics. I continued my musical studies with various concert pianists including Norma Fisher, Albert Ferber, and played in the masterclasses of Vlado Perlemuter at Dartington , Louis Kentner, and Jorge Bolet in Edinburgh Scotland and the Library of Congress in Washington DC. I was awarded the ARCM diploma with honours from the Royal College of Music in 1976. I emigrated to the USA in 1980, live near Boston Massachusetts, and work for General Dynamics (formerly worked for GTE) designing telecommunication systems. In my spare time I prepare for piano recitals, play chamber music, prepare midi sequences and occasionally teach the piano. I have given many recitals in the UK, USA, Israel and Argentina, and have played on local radio and television. My repertoire includes concertos by Mozart, Schumann, Shostakovitch, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninoff which I have played with various orchestras. I have recorded two CDs for QRS Music Rolls Inc. I am presently having occasional lessons with Gabriel Chodos in Boston.

Extractions: John Paul Jones John Paul Jones John Baldwin Young John Bambi . Yes, "Bambi" . That's what Chris Hughes , the tenor sax player with the Jet Harris/ Tony Meehan Band christened him. Bambi with the big soft eyes who went on to become a legend in his own life time. I first met John around 1963 on a Christmas gig. He could only have been 16 or 17 years old then. And he was playing a green bass guitar. I found out later that one of the records that persuaded him to take up bass was " Shakin' all Ove r " - The bass sound on a Juke box was quite devastating and that had turned him on. I think John's Dad was on Piano that night at the gig. Anyway, I do remember that it was a pleasant gig, and it was a "mixed music" gig. Rhumbas, sambas, rock, standards, c/w, jingle bells etc -you had to cover a lot of ground. So I knew John was capable of playing things where you followed your ear. Ad lib, chord construction, the "right' bass notes. And I knew he had some education. Plus a raw groove, so the makings were already there. All that was needed was development and experience. Most people think of John as a Bass Guitarist, which He is. But He has other great talents. He was originally a Pianist. I understand that he spent his formative years studying Piano and Organ, the latter in his local church. And I believe that by the age of 12 or 14 he was actually Choirmaster at an esteemed London Cathedral. Now that in itself is an incredible achievement. Of course with knowledge of the keyboard He was able to understand the complete range of an orchestra and the ranges of the various instruments within .
