Those who still hold onto the counterproductive view that this is not a "real" orchestra were not at this sold-out concert in Davis or they simply want to live in the past. In an era of tough sales, talk of dwindling audiences and old habits, being able to hang up the "Sold out!" sign would have been reason enough for the orchestra and its management to crow before it even played a note. After Saturday's triumphant performances of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 powerfully played by pianist Tian Ying; the orchestra's winning version of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 2; and Darius Milhaud's charming "Le Boeuf sur le Toit" (the ox on the roof), there was sound evidence of the orchestra's professional and artistic mien. (That the orchestra only plays five concerts or so a year is sad, considering performances such as Saturday's are clearly possible, but financially out of reach.) Contributing to Saturday's success was a varied, listenable program, chosen and expertly conducted by the philharmonic's music director, Michael Morgan. The setting was an immense benefit. With its lively acoustics, Jackson Hall provided the orchestra with a royal chance to be heard properly. Maybe the orchestra has sounded this great all along. It is hard to know. The Community Center Theater is no friend of unamplified sound.

But there's an alternative to the Super Bowl on Sunday. The Arizona Friends of Chamber Music is sponsoring a concert that does more than give the football-impaired an excuse to get out of the house. It's also been crafted to help those ignorant of classical music get a small taste of its quiet pleasures. "Piano and Friends," in its inaugural series this year, features young, relatively unknown musicians who play the kind of music that gets neglected in a scene that favors the big symphony. Sunday's concert, at the Leo Rich Theater, will have Bernadene Blaha, a young Canadian pianist, and Peter Rejto, a cellist formerly at the UA and now at Oberlin, playing a variety of duets and solos by Bach, Shostakovitch, Chopin and Brahms. "This is a type of concert that's tremendously neglected all over the country," says Jean-Paul Bierny, a Tucson physician who is president of Arizona Friends of Chamber Music. "We're trying to change that." For years the Friends have hosted evening chamber music performances by some of the most famous groups in classical music. For the new, lower-key series, their strategy is to ferret out talented young musicians who have not yet broken into the big-time scene, or whose playing, perhaps, is not of the flashy style favored in the prestigious competitions. They contacted well-known piano teachers around the country for recommendations. So far, the strategy has paid off, Bierny says.

The Louisville Orchestra, an ensemble in artistic transition, will depend on a series of guest conductors for its core classical subscription series in 2004-05. The orchestra is preparing to launch a search for a successor to music director Uriel Segal, whose tenure ends when his contract expires this summer. The fall season will begin Sept. 11 with the traditional Fanfara gala at the Kentucky Center's Whitney Hall. The program will be conducted by Steven Mercurio, probably best known for collaborating with such singers as Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo, and for his series of Christmas concerts with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. For his Fanfara program, Mercurio will be joined by bluegrass/classical crossover violinist Mark O'Connor in a performance of O'Connor's "Call of the Mockingbird." The concert will also include Barner's "Adagio for Strings," Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait" and John Alden Carpenter's 1924 jazz-infused "Skyscrapers."

Extractions: Photo by Bill Luster When Margaret Comstock gave $1 million to the University of Louisville School of Music three years ago, she had visions of propelling its keyboard program toward international prominence. Things didn't work out as she intended, but undeterred, she and U of L have shifted her gift's support to her other musical passion: singing. Beginning this year, the Comstock Choral Fund will inject about $50,000 annually to U of L's highly regarded Collegiate Chorale and associated activities. It's a significant boost for the chorale and director Kent Hatteberg, who has molded the student ensemble into one of the area's finest choruses. For Comstock, whose largesse prompted the university to rename North Recital Hall in her honor, the gift allows her to support a major component of the school and a choral director whom she deems a major talent. She'd become frustrated with what she considered lukewarm support for her keyboard initiative, built around a teaching residency of pianist Tian Ying and recitals by various guest artists. Comstock believes bolstering the vocal program will be more successful. "I wanted them to make that school stand on its ear with that choral plan," she said in a recent interview, adding that Hatteberg "has everything at his fingertips, and now he has the money to do it."
