Church Speed, Missouri From "Cooper County Church Sketches" by F. Chesnutt, 1993 The Bethel congregation has been at the corner of South Broadway and Parrish Streets since 1887, The town was then known as New Palestine as it was largely made up of businesses that had moved to be close to the railroad from the original town of Palestine, begun in 1833. The Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad began its operation in the late 1860's shipping passengers and cattle between Boonville and the Pacific Railroad at Tipton. The town of New Palestine changed its name around 1903 to honor Austin Speed, the railroad conductor from 1876 to 1890. The Bethel Church has always been the center of social life in the community. The May Homecoming and Fall Festival are attended by friends and descendants from all over the state. At times the Church sponsored a baseball team.
The United And States Labels Part II (1954-1957) consisted of Irving Woods (trumpet); Charlie wright and robert From the collectionof robert L. Campbell. Shorty Hill, and acquired a pianist whose identity we http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~campber/unitedstates2.html
Extractions: Part II (1954-1957) Latest update: June 4, 2004 We continue the United/States story as the company began its decline; for the first three years, see our Part I. In 1954 the indications would not be too dire, though recording activity did fall off somewhat. From the collection of Tom Kelly A T-Bone Walker disciple, guitarist L. C. McKinley, was born on 22 October 1918, in Winona, Mississippi, but was located in Chicago by 1941. Though his membership card and death certificate give only the initials, his two released sides bear composer credits to "Larry" McKinley. McKinley did not begin to play professionally until 1947; he joined the union on February 3 of that year. In the early 1950s he was a regular headliner at the famed 708 Club. He first recorded as a leader in 1953 for the Parrot label, but Al Benson chose not to release his session. We suspect that McKinley did some other poorly documented session work during this period. L. C. McKinley signed with States around the beginning of 1954 and was promptly brought into the studio on January 11. On his one session for the label, he was accompanied by an ace blues band of Eddie Boyd (piano), Ernest Cotton (tenor sax), Ransom Knowling (bass), and Odie Payne (drums). The guitarist subsequently recorded two sessions for Vee-Jay From the collection of Tom Kelly Sharing the session with L. C. McKinley was tenor saxman

Special guests are George Duke, Philip Bailey, Howard Hewett and Jonathan Butler. [ www.audiocaviar.com www.cdbaby.com/cd/audiocaviar Not available on CD! Very good album featuring the flute-playing Jimmi Brown. Inventor of the so-called Dazz sound (Danceable Jazz) also adapted by Kinsman Dazz/Dazz Band. Available on CD is the 12 track "Best of Brick" (Epic EK 66870) from 1995. This is pretty average and missing some crucial cuts in my opinion.
Body wright resides in Moncton and is a principal flutist with the takes place on October30th and features singer robert Pomakov and pianist Brahm Glodhamer http://www.unb.ca/web/bruns/frosh/03/entertainment/creativearts.html
Extractions: The Brunswickan Printer Friendly Version What do you get when you combine a classical guitarist, a flutist and a modern dancer? You get a spectacular opening show from the UNB/STU Creative Arts 2002-2003 series. Last Saturday's performance teamed up musicians Steven Peacock and Sally Wright with modern dancer Sue Lambropoulos. The show began with `Aria No.1' written by Francis Kleynjans. Lambdropoulos danced with a long piece of fabric by her feet as Peacock and Wright provided accompaniment to her graceful movements. `Twelve Spanish Dances' (Enrique Granados) and `Japanese Suite' (Marvin Falcon) followed. Peacock and Wright brilliantly captured the ethnic flavoring in these pieces. Wright's performance in the `Japanese Suite' was particularly noteworthy. She truly made her instrument sing like a nightingale.

Extractions: By Bill Hersey It's spring again and, like just about everyone I know, love this weather. As you know, we'll soon be heading into Golden Week. As I mentioned several columns ago, the long holiday starts Apr. 29, Green Day, then moves on to Constitution Day on May 3, People's Day May 4 and Children's Day May 5 which is a Sunday, so Monday, May 6, is also a holiday. Although May 1, Labor Day, is not a national holiday, many people take off from work. Some demonstrate, others take off for popular vacation destinations or just lay back and relax. I'm spending five days in Guam before Golden Week because I've learned with higher air fares, crowded airports and booked-up resorts, that Tokyo, with lots of people out of town and many cultural events taking place, can be a laid-back and enjoyable place to be over the long holiday period. Whatever, wherever, I hope you have a good one. As always, it was an SRO crowd of Tokyo's most fashionable people at the latest
