Extractions: While 1998 won't be remembered as a year in which jazz saw dramatic or revolutionary change, it certainly had more than its share of ear-filling moments. So how does one pick the year's top 10? You don't. You fudge and pick 11 instead! From the formal to the free and with plenty of funk, here's a short list of this year's best. No small feat, but jazz pianist Misha Mengelberg is the godfather of the entire Dutch improvisation scene. And on "No Idea," he proves why. Mixing the familiar (George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk) with great improv skills and a rock-solid rhythm section (courtesy Greg Cohen and Joey Baron), the Misha Mengelberg Trio rollick through these tunes with a deft, adventurous touch. There's nothing standard here. Randy Weston never ceases to find new heights of excellence, whether exploring West African polyrhythms in jazz or excoriating silence with blasting energy. Khepera roars open with "Creation," which ushers in a lengthy, telling meditation on jazz's intercontinental reach, both in terms of source material and influence. Chief Bey's percussion and Pharoah Sanders's saxophone playing bookend the meditation. Then Weston turns to duets with pipa virtuoso Min Xiao Fen, showing the free sprawl of shared improvisational languages.

Perhaps it is no surprise that few, if any, were willing to take on the task of writing a study of British light music across the board until, fool-like, I rushed in to do my 'British Light Music' published by Thames in 1997. Writing light music can often run in families. In serious music we have the Bachs, the Mozarts and the Lehmanns (Amelia and Liza)/Bedfords (Herbert and Stewart) - although the two Lehmanns may just as plausibly be considered as contributors to the light music scene, especially if we reckon (as I think we must) ballad-type songs as falling within the light music domain. In the various fields of light music we can readily point to several "families". The Godfreys were pre-eminent examples of this and we have already discussed them at some length in Garland 6; we have similarly alluded to two of the
