Extractions: ''I was too naive,'' says 38-year-old Wong. ''I thought there would be room for me to release my ideal type of music.'' But as it turned out, there was no space in the local market for the music he had been working on for the past 18 months, at least in the opinion of local record executives. ''I already planned a year's break to absorb new ideas after the last Beyond concert in 1999 because I didn't want my own music to sound like Beyond's,'' says Wong, who joined his late brother, Koma Wong Kar-kui, in the Beyond line-up 19 years ago. ''Last year, I started working on an album of ambient music. It was a new direction for me. I locked myself up in my home studio for five months doing it.''

Extractions: Our junior choir was established when Mr. Joe Chan joined Wah Yan College to become a music teacher in September 1991. This year, we have approximately eighty members and most of them are F.1 and F.2 boys. We have Ms Hwong Yen Fang as Our teacher advisor and Mr Yiu Yun Kwan, David as the conductor. In September, like the past years, our teacher adviser, Miss Hwong Yen Fong chose some new members from the new Form 1 students and we started practice in October,2001. The Choir members were divided into three parts: first soprano, second soprano and alto according to their voices. We had practices twice a week during lunch and after school. We learn how to sing correctly during the first practice. Unlike the past years, we focused on prepareing the two songs for the competition. We did not take part at the Speech Day this year. The two songs were "Cross the Wide Missouri" and "The Little Horses". The set piece, "Cross the Wide Missouri", has beautiful melodies and lyrics with a moderate tempo at the beginning. Then it becomes a bit slower and more expressive. At last, it changes to a faster tempo. The song describes a man who had determination to cross the Missouri to see his lover. "The Little Horses" was our own choice, which is a relaxing song with graceful melody.

Extractions: Music Index Metro Metroactive Central Archives High Musical Math By Nicky Baxter Things got off to a rousing start with a Jang composition titled "Jazz InsidiousJazz Improper 209 ('Tis De-Kline Arts Apartheid, San Francisco)," a pointed if somewhat arcane reference to Randall Kline, the city's arts-funding overlord. Title aside, the piece was a powerfully evocative, unmistakably heated polemic, with Jang's ominous storm-cloud rumblings initiating an intense dialogue with Wong, whose tenor alternately whinnied and belched in response. As the tune unfolded, the two musicians seemed to strike off in polar directions, each instrument spiraling farther "out." Not unlike aerial combatants, saxophone and piano attacked and retreated fiercely. Yet at the core of this cacophony, one could sense a unity of vision. And as the song's conclusion made plain, that vision was not without humor. If the introductory number illustrated the duo's facility in the New Black Music tradition, "Autumn Moon Over a Calm Lake" and "For Tom" were compelling examples of how that tradition's lexicon has been broadened by Asian folk forms. Based on a traditional love song, "Autumn Moon" commenced with Jang trilling out a butterfly-fragile Chinese motif with his right hand; at once familiar and exotic, the melody was utterly entrancing. Wong's tenor was deliberate, burrowing deep into the instrument's lower register, sounding somewhat like a distant cousin to Coleman Hawkins.

After all, the New York-based composer was scheduled for Cabrillo twice before, and twice sent regrets instead of showing up. It's a testament to festival music director Marin Alsop's faith in Danielpour's music that she insisted once more that he come.
