Extractions: The Colorado Springs Symphony Guild announced Saturday that it has bought the music library of the now-defunct Colorado Springs Symphony Orchestra for $101,000 at an auction held last week in Denver. The purchase, said Guild board member Jane Beeder, was made possible by a large grant from the CSSO Foundation. The Guild also announced that it would donate the library to Colorado College, which will house the library and make it available to orchestras in the Colorado Springs community, including the newly formed Colorado Springs Philharmonic. "We're delighted to be able to participate in keeping the music here," said Michael Grace, chairman of the music department at CC. "I love symphonic music and I think it's one of the most important attractions in Colorado Springs." Grace said the college would make the music available to local orchestras within the next few weeks for a nominal administrative fee that will pay for the college to hire a new music librarian. After a brief and heated labor dispute this past January, the 75-year-old CSSO filed for bankruptcy. All of its remaining assets including office equipment, some musical instruments and the music library were put up for auction to repay creditors.

This Ferris State University archive - pictures and seriously-researched text, covering art, media and advertising, 1877-1960s, in the USA. Alongside a gallery of excruciating images, There's a superb analysis - "Tom", "Mammie", "Picaninny" and others - of how black characters were stereotyped for sociopolitical purposes. This highlights the surprising, and frightening, fact that southern US states. until recently, operated an institutional system as racist as the better-known South African apartheid. A related site is Lies My Teacher Told Me . This is sociologist and writer James W Loewen's site for his book that shows how American schoolbooks distort and whitewash USA history. Did you know that Helen Keller was a Communist? That a major war, King Philip's War, is often omitted from US history textbooks? That the term of office of Woodrow Wilson, remembered as an enlightened and moderate president, involved more invasions of other countries than any other period of US history? The web site has an on-line quiz, with surprising answers. The book covers American history from ancient to modern: the now well-known history of Pre-Columbian colonisation; the mythology surrounding the first Thanksgiving; the Indian Wars; the invisibility in textbooks of America's racist past; the similar invisibility of anti-racist movements; and modern history such as poverty in the 20th century and the acts of Federal government, particularly destabilisation of elected foreign regimes. Throughout, Loewen argues, textbooks either omit facts or present them in a pro-mainstream light; students will never be told that mainstream America, in its historical past, did anything that was less than perfect, or even morally wrong.

The Florida Orchestra had a close eye on the bottom line when putting together its 2004-05 masterworks season, says music director Stefan Sanderling. "We have to balance the artistic side of it and the financial aspect of it," Sanderling said. "We have to make sure that every single program is a financial success. Our situation is very dangerous at the moment." One people pleaser: A Rachmaninoff minifestival, with three programs featuring three Russian pianists in the composer's four piano concertos plus his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a lineup that includes some of the most oft-played works in the orchestral repertoire.

Extractions: Although the planned Aretha Franklin concert was cancelled, Milwaukee audiences can welcome another woman artist of immense talent: Pop-folk troubadour Patty Larkin returns, this time carrying her 10th CD, Red Luck (Vanguard). Larkin, who is equally adept as a singer, songwriter and musician, has enjoyed a 15-year career that has been steadily heralded but has never reached the heights of her contemporaries such as Bonnie Raitt or Lucinda Williams. The 14-song disc highlights Larkin's trademark ambient sound and tight guitar work in an encyclopedic romp through musical genres. A handful of guest musicians joined her on the record and contributed everything from Middle Eastern scales to Celtic-inspired arrangements (thanks to members of Solas). Guest vocalists include Milwaukee favorite Willy Porter. Larkin takes the Shank Hall stage, joined by drummer/producer Ben Wittman and others, Saturday, May 3. Larkin shares her joy of experimentation with music from around the world with another band slated to visit Milwaukee

During the career of composer and native North Carolinian Kenneth Frazelle, this sort of aesthetic inquiry has led to a rich and varied body of work, encompassing the complex and non-tonal approach of his earliest creations, multi-disciplinary events, contemporaneous use of folk materials, and an idiosyncratic perspective on the classical forms of the past. His ancestors were North Carolina farmers as far back as the late 17 th century. However, his parents joined the throngs of 1950s Americans to settle into suburban living. Music was part of his early life as his father was an amateur folk musician. My dad had a great ear, said Frazelle. He had a natural musical ability, primitive. He could pick up an instrument, like harmonica or a toy piano, could pick out tunes. Sadly, his father died when Frazelle was only 6 years old. Sometime after this, his mother placed young Kenneth in piano lessons with a local teacher. Of his mother, Frazelle stated, She wasnt very cultured herself, but was very good about supporting any natural gifts that [my siblings and myself] had. With the same encouragement, his brother has gone on to become a visual artist and his sister has a thriving career in dance.

Although his father died when Frazelle was only six years old, the son has vivid memories of a musical guessing game he and his father used to play. His mother placed young Kenneth in piano lessons at the age of nine. His teacher, Mrs. Gladys Sylvester, lived in a small town not far from the lands of his farming ancestors, yet "she really knew the piano and had very good training herself. She started me on Czerny and Chopin etudes." Frazelle's curiosity in the music he was playing led to the discovery of a treasure trove of LPs at the local library, immersing him in the sounds of European classical music. "I started checking out Stravinsky conducting his own music, Bartok, Varese, just anything I could get hold of. I really got into classical music through the piano."
