Extractions: Simson has sung with opera companies throughout the United States including Houston Opera, Dallas Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Memphis and Opera Colorado performing such roles as Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos, and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. She has also performed as soloist in major oratorio works with the Denver, Colorado Springs, Cedar Rapids, Omaha and Milwaukee Symphonies and in Boulder at the MahlerFest and Bach Festival. Simson was the recipient of a grant to study and perform in Europe where she subsequently won the prestigious Mozart Prize at the International Belvedere Competition in Vienna. Although Tessler states that there is no timetable for appointing a new Music Director, with the excellent prospects for 2004 and possibly for 2005, he expects that the position will be resolved with diligence and an exceptional candidate. According to Executive Director Don Reinhold, "It's not unusual for an orchestra to go one, or even two years without a Music Director. In the short run, these periods in an orchestra's life offer both the orchestra and public an interesting perspective of different musical viewpoints, and an opportunity to hear some great repertoire that might not have been the focus during Maestro Oue's tenure."

Concordia Chamber Player's second concert this season will again present David Kim, Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, as a soloist in the April concert. The virtuosity of David Kim will be displayed in the Bach Sonata No.2 in A minor for unaccompanied violin. Then the Piano Trio of Ravel features William Wolfram with David Kim and Michelle Djokic, cello. After intermission, Choong-Jin Chang, viola, joins the trio for the Piano Quartet in G minor, Opus 25, of Johannes Brahms. The Concert is on Sunday April 16th, 3pm, at the New Hope-Solebury High School Stephen Buck Theater. The California native returned to the MSO last fall after completing a very successful season as Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, including tours of Greece, Holland, Belgium, and concerts at the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, all with its Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev. Extractions: Special to The Seattle Times E-mail this article Print this article Search archive After last week's snowstorm, it's difficult to imagine dining al fresco with chamber music wafting through the breeze, but for the sixth year running, the Seattle Chamber Music Society wants to remind you of summer in the middle of winter. This past weekend the society's "Winter Interlude" reunited stellar musicians, many of whom are familiar from the group's summer appearances, from across the country and Canada. At Sunday's third and final concert, the audience's murmurs of satisfaction were audible after nearly every movement. Schumann's "Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano" in G minor featured violinist Ida Levin, cellist Ronald Thomas, and pianist Jeremy Denk in a richly textured piece that moved between agitation and reflection. Despite the lovely melodies and exciting tempos, Levin and Thompson's tones, particularly in their sustained vibrato sounds, did not match throughout. Levin dug in for an earthier, more organic sound, while Thomas displayed a brighter clarity. The musical equivalent of a bonbon, Grieg's "Two Elegiac Melodies" for four-handed piano delivered a short, yet stately opportunity for pianists Denk and William Wolfram. The two players combined forces so seamlessly that if you closed your eyes it sounded like one person playing an unusually dense piano part.

Extractions: Colorado native Darrell Grant brings his emotive piano stylings to town this Friday. "The pianos in jazz clubs usually suck," jokes Darrell Grant, the prodigal son of jazz. "Everybody knows churches have the best pianos." While Grant's seamless and innovative fusion of pop, classical and jazz may not appeal to purists, its accessible melodicism and emotional intensity have helped to establish the versatile pianist as of one the genre's most gifted musical storytellers. On Jan. 23, Grant, a Colorado native, will return home to present Spirit: An Evening of Music from the Heart , at the All Souls Unitarian-Univeralist Church as part of their Journey to Community Performance Series. Even prior to leaving Colorado as a teenager to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, Grant had realized the piano's vast potential as a storytelling tool. "When I was 8, and I heard Harry Belafonte singing 'Erev Shel Shoshanim' in Hebrew, it was one the most beautiful things ever, and it convinced me that music had an unmatched ability to bring people together."
