Extractions: Back to description View the table of contents The 1969 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival featured one of the best collections of musical talent ever assembled. It starred Count Basie and His Orchestra (whose members included Buck Clayton, Dicky Wells, Buddy Tate, and Earl Warren). The six-day festival also included performances by Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hackett, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Milt Hinton, Jacki Byard, Alan Dawson, and Bob Green. New Orleans bands led by Jim Robinson, Sharkey Bonano, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Louis Cottrell, and Johnny Wiggs also appeared. Barry Martyn brought his group of young jazzmen from England, and Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band came from Denmark. Dizzy Gillespie, Roland Kirk, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Eddie Miller, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Zutty Singleton, Harry Shields, Tony Parenti, and Sarah Vaughan rounded out the roster of jazz giants. Amid this mind-boggling array of talent, the festival's most impressive segment may have been a twelve-minute interval by a frail, eighty-six-year-old pianist. He needed assistance entering the stage when producer Willis Conover announced his name. As the applause mounted, his halting gait became a vigorous stride, until at last the little man was scampering toward the piano bench with his hands clasped over his head like a prize fighter. The next few moments were sheer magic. The pianist played with power and joy, juxtaposing an intricate right-hand melody against an electrifying left-handed "oom-pah" bass to create an intense ragtime syncopation.

Earl Wild: 20th & 21st Century Piano Sonatas Boston Globe September 1, 2000 To celebrate his 85th birthday, everyoungpianist earl wild recorded this monumental CD of craggy 20th century works. http://www.ivoryclassics.com/earwil2021ce.html
Extractions: Earl Wild, whose legendary career has spanned over 70 years, performs in this brand new recording four 20th and 21st century piano sonatas. Mr. Wild states: "I had a personal friendship with all four composers on this disc, although one of the relationships has been a little more intimate. I have performed the Hindemith and Stravinsky sonatas in public many times since the 1940s. The Barber Sonata however is a first performance for me. I have the greatest admiration for this wonderful work. My own Sonata was completed in April of this year. A stylistically eclectic work, it incorporates Civil War tunes, echoes of popular music of the 1920s and, in the finale (entitled "Toccata a la Ricky Martin"), there is a distinctive Latin American flavor!" "The 20th-century sonatas are by Barber, Hindemith (the Third Sonata), and Stravinsky; Wild composed the 21st century sonata himself. As you might expect, Wild's 20-minute virtuoso work is skillfully and idiomatically written for the keyboard, and highly entertaining. The first movement is energetic with a bluesy interlude; the second movement refers to the popular music of Wild's youth. The finale, a brilliant Toccata, begins to dance in a Latin rhythm, so Wild presents it as an homage to Ricky Martin, whose ease and charm captivated Wild, who is no slouch at ease and charm himself. Wild's performance of the Wild Sonata is brilliant and of course authoritative; the pianist is no less effective in the other sonatas."

Extractions: Earl Wild Having mastered ever facet of this art, American pianist Earl Wild is the complete musician and ultimate virtuoso. The pianistic tradition represented by Earl Wild can be traced directly to Franz Liszt through his studies with Selmar Jansen, who studied with Liszt pupils Xavier Scharwenka and Eugen d'Albert. Further studies were with the great Dutch pianist Egon Petri, a pupil of Busoni; Paul Doguereau, the distinguished French pianist and pupil of Ravel; Madame Barere, wife of the great Russian pianist Simon Barere; and Volya Cossack, a pupil of Isidore Philipp, who studied with Saint-Saens. Although still in his teens, Mr. Wild was hired by NBC in New York to become staff pianist. During his eight years at NBC he frequently participated as a member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini. In 1984 Arturo Toscanini invited Earl Wild to perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. This distinction made him the first American soloist and youngest artist to ever appear with the NBC Symphony a particular honor in light of Toscanini's infrequent use of soloists. The Rhapsody was a first performance for both Earl Wild and Maestro Toscanini. For an artist as prominent as Earl Wild, it is hardly surprising that he has participated in many premieres. In 1939 he was the first artist ever to give a piano recital on U.S. television. In Paris, in 1949, he was soloist in the world premiere performance of Paul Creston's Piano Concerto, later giving the American premiere of the work in Washington. In 1944 he was the pianist in the American premiere of Shostakovich's Piano Trio in E minor. With Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony in December of 1970, Mr. Wild gave the world premiere of Marvin David Levy's First Piano Concerto, a work specially written for him.

These works achieved mass appeal by responding to the popular taste of the time, but songs like and Si mes vers avaient des ailes soar with a timeless beauty that assures them a place at the pinnacle of vocal music. Clarity, distinction, articulation, lightness, spiritual elegance that leaves no room for vulgar sentimentality, all these qualities of his songs can be found in the 53 poems for piano that make up Le rossignol éperdu [The Bewildered Nightingale]. Pièces de clavecin en concert, Pièces Pittoresques Fêtes Lointaines but its spirit magnifies the quintessence of French sensibility, carefully traced throughout the four suites that compose the work. A musical love letter or intimate little encyclopedia filled with allusions and epigraphs, this work would best be read with score in hand (Heugel publisher): devotees of literature will be delighted to learn that Marcel Proust, Hahns alter ego, wrote about his friend, "All that I have accomplished is because of Reynaldo." Just as in Debussys Preludes, these epigraphs are also metaphors, hypallages and paradigms that can be interpreted ad libitum.

Extractions: This all started with a "Consumer Guide" I wrote for the Village Voice, New York's big alternative weekly. I listened to 17 recordings of this suddenly popular concerto, and wrote 17 quick paragraphs, with a grade attached to each one. Poor David Helfgott got an F; Vladimir Horowitz got an A, for his version with Fritz Reiner conducting. (Though a later Horowitz release, a live performance with Eugene Ormandy, only got C+.) You can read this adventure, right here on this site. Much later and by a happy coincidence I was asked to write about the concerto once again, this time for the Los Angeles Times. In fact, I was asked to defend it against critical attacks, which I was happy to do. The more I listened to it, for my Voice consumer guide, the more I loved it. And I enlisted two very articulate pianists to help me defend it Alexander Toradze, and Byron Janis. Morton St., Bloomington, IN 47404), 1990 (paperback edition 2001). 192 pp., $19.95. To any professional pianist the name Maurice Hinson calls forth a number of images: meticulous scholar, prolific editor and author, energizing and inspiring lecturer. Hinson has greatly enriched the piano teaching and performing professions with his guides to various genres of repertoire, his informative and extensively researched editions of music, and his workshops and videotapes. In 1990, Indiana University Press published Hinson's book, The Pianist's Guide to Transcriptions, Arrangements, and Paraphrases. As he notes in the highly informative Preface, transcriptions are a time-honored art and have flourished for centuries. It was during several decades of the twentieth century, when the pendulum of taste swung heavily to the purist approach to performance, that the transcription/arrangement fell into disfavor with many performers, scholars and teachers. Some pianists, howevernotably Earl Wildcontinued to perform this genre, and as we begin the twenty-first century, this form of music has again returned to the concert hall.
