In music, perfect pitch (also known as "absolute pitch") is the ability to distinguish and identify a given note without any musical or tonal support. For a more detailed explanation, see Q1. Note on classical composers : It is said most of them had perfect pitch. However, the existence of important composers that did not have perfect pitch (Wagner, Berlioz, Schumann, Stravinsky, Ravel, etc.) should prevent us from posting incorrect information. Therefore we must limit ourselves to include documented (books, magazines, television interviews, etc.) information exclusively. B/L Name Occupation Nationality Abbado, Claudio new! Extractions: Considered throughout the world as one of the last in a long line of great virtuoso pianists/composers, Earl Wild has often been called a "super virtuoso" "one of the 20th century's greatest pianists" ; and "the finest transcriber of our time." Born on November 26, 1915 in Pittsburgh, PA, he began piano studies at the age of three. At this early age he displayed the rare gift of absolute pitch and was labeled a child prodigy. Mr. Wild's teachers have included the great Dutch pianist Egon Petri, a student of Ferruccio Busoni; the distinguished French pianist Paul Doguereau, who was a pupil of Paderewski and Ravel; Selmar Janson, who studied with Eugen d'Albert and Xaver Scharwenka, both students of Franz Liszt; and Madame Helen Barere, the wife of the great Russian pianist Simon Barere. Earl Wild has appeared with nearly every orchestra, as well as performed countless recitals, in virtually every country. During his distinguished career, he has collaborated with many great conductors, such as Toscanini, Stokowski, Reiner, Klemperer, Horenstein, Leinsdorf, Fiedler, Mitropoulos, Grofe, Ormandy, Sargent, Dorati, Maazel, Solti, Copland, and Schippers; great instrumentalists such as Elman, Shumsky, Ricci, Mischakoff, Balakovich, Primrose, Gingold, Rose, Shapiro and Miller; and great singers such as Callas, Tourel, Pons, Matzenauer, Maynor, Melchior, Merrill, Lanza, Peerce, Milanov, Bumbry, and Lear.

The excellent selection of music and Wild's virtuoso playing are both marvelous. I was particularly taken with the Bach fuge and the splendid Gershwin transcriptions. Don't miss this one!

Extractions: Wild's Sonata a Fine Addition. I originally purchased this album, along with several others, to hear various interpretations of the Barber Piano Sonata, which I was working on at the time. (I am a classical pianist by trade) It was immediately apparent that this is one of the best recordings of the Barber available. Mr. Wild's interpretation brings a freshness and naturalness to this work, and with it, a considerable amount of bravura. The performances of the Hindemith and the Stravinsky are no less satisfying. Audiophiles will also appreciate this album's realistic sound. But to my surprise, the most significant aspect of this album is in the recording of Mr. Wild's own Sonata. If one believes as I, that great art is multifaceted, then this work succeeds on many fronts. First, it draws on several sources that are truly American, utilizing Blues, Jazz, Stomp, Folk, Latin, and even Pop idioms. Second, it weaves these ideas into a taught fabric of a Classical Sonata form, but with a unique twist. Third, the work's harmony is lush and exotic, often calling on extended harmony, chromaticism, and octatonicism in a fashion not unlike other (successful) compositions of the last 100 years. Finally, the piece is a joy to play, being quite idiomatic to the instrument.
