Extractions: Among some of the grandest musical events which happened in Russia this past spring was the Fourth International Contemporary Music Festival «Europe-Asia», which took place in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Though technically part of the Russian Federation, Tatarstan obtained a status of autonomy in 1992, so to a great degree its government has control over its own territory in a number of important issues, most notably its economy. As a result Tatarstan has access to money, which the rest of Russia does not have, which enables Tatarstan to establish contact with many Asian, most notably Middle Eastern countries as well as with Europe and, most importantly, set up some cultural happenings of its own. One of the most prominent of the latter is the international «Europe-Asia» Festival of Contemporary Music. The Tatars are a distinct ethnic group within Russia, who have a unique ancient history and culture, as well as strongly found and held Muslim tradition. The Tatars are descendants of the Bulgars, who lived on the Volga more than a thousand years ago, while the theory of their relation to the Mongol Horde of Chinghis Khan is strongly disputed and argued for and, for the most part, against. Many important Russian cultural figures have also either lived in Kazan or visited there for lengthy periods of time and the city contains important landmarks and historical documents tied with many notable Tatar and Russian historical figures and events.

Together with their teachers they will ski, mountain hike, - in other words, vacation. Lydia OVCHARIK Volunteer is a Proud Word! The service of voluntary social service has been operating in Hesed Menachem since 1994, helping the needy-the service of volunteers. It is hard to underestimate the part played by willful helpers in the lives of lonely and ill pensioners. They take meals to homes, help around the house, and run various errands and which is very important they support their clients emotionally. Now there are almost 400 volunteers working in Hesed. The best of them were invited on December 24 to the Freilechs club. Lydia Solomonovna Rashba, the Chairman of the Hesed Board, congratulated everyone with Hanukkah. She told the audience that when she was in America she met with volunteers and studied their work. In the distant America the volunteering is highly appreciated and honored. Our volunteers are primarily elderly people but we would like to see young people among them!

It began with a festival in Munich in Babylon, which has the biggest stage in the Kunstpark Ost, where the surprising ideas of the chinese pipa and flute-master Sa Mu attracted the attention of the public as well as that of his over 30 fellow-musicians. Roman Bunka organised his stay, since he has been playing with and learning from him since many years, as well as presented him to the european audience. The sessions involved fewer musicians, and were entirely acoustic, with a chamber-music sort of atmosphere and on a high musical level. Abdu Dagir has played in the orchestra of Egypt's most famous female singer, Oum Kalzum, and is a living treasure-box as far as oriental music is concerned. His violin improvisations and his composition are highly esteemed in all arab countries. In 1999, the famous museum Fondació Miró helped to realise two projects with embryo.
