Tjako van Schie Tjako van Schie made his public debut with a recital of Haydn's works. In his 30-year career, Schie has won prestigious international piano contests such as the Debussy Talent Contest in Holland, the Vladiguerov Piano Competition in Bulgaria, the Bellini Music Competition in Italy and the Marguerite Long Competition in France. Schie has appeared as guest virtuoso at the Seiler International Piano Festival in Germany, the Brahms Music Days International Festival in Germany and the Music Festival of the Hamptons in the US. He is regularly invited as guest professor to conservatories in Portugal, Germany, France and Spain. At his August 3 recital, he will perform several pieces of music associated with water, including Gade's "Barcarole," Grieg's "The Brook," Ravel's "Game of Water" and Debussy's "Ondine." "The whole performance breathes a beneficent tranquility and profundity which one would not expect in such a young musician," commented a critic at Piano World, a music periodical.

Extractions: This interest goes further than just music, but it also covers the Japanese language, literature and culture. This may help to develop a deeper understanding of Japanese music. Therefore I regularly perform Japanese music, both in projects at the conservatory and in concerts (for example in January 2004 during the concert together with Tjako van Schie). The pieces which I play are not only contemporary but also more traditional. A number of examples of these pieces are: This work by Nakao Tozan, originally for shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute), was written in 1904 at the outbreak of the Japanese-Russian war. The composer wrote this during a moonlit night in a temple garden, while he was overcome with feelings of sadness, because of the war. The title means 'weeping moon'. Because of the strong emotional content, the music can move people deeply. The shakuhachi is a very flexible instrument, capable of making large dynamical differences and very soft playing. Although the instrument has only got five holes, it can make very supple and effortless glissandi, together with all kinds of quarter tones. The vibrato of a shakuhachi is often very different from that of a saxophone, it is darker and has a wood-like quality. By playing this music on a soprano saxophone, you transcend the way of playing which is common to the more traditional, western repertoire. Sound, dynamics and intonation take both audience and player to a different world.

Henk van Twillert Tjako van Schie Vooruitlopend op een optreden in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam op donderdag 25 maart 2004 zal het Orquestra de Saxofones Portuguesa in Coevorden optreden samen met de pianist Tjako van Schie. Dit orkest van het conservatorium in Porto werd in de zomer van 1998 door Henk van Twillert opgericht in samenwerking met het Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet en de saxofoonklas van het conservatorium. Henk van Twillert is nu leraar klassieke saxofoon en dirigent van het orkest. Het orkest, dat uit 16 personen bestaat, heeft al talloze concerten in geheel Portugal gegeven en speelde diverse malen op internationale festivals. Het maakte ook in 1999 al een toernee door Nederland en het hoogtepunt toen was ook een concert in het Concertgebouw van Amsterdam waar zij eveneens een wereldpremiere van een werk van Gijs van Dijk speelden, en wel het Concert voor Basklarinet en Saxofoonorkest, waarbij de bekende klarinettist Harry Sparnaay de solist was. De Culturele Commissie Coevorden is heel blij dit bijzondere concert te kunnen aanbieden.
