Celebrating Mother's Day With Music by hornist Jerome Ashby, clarinetist Allen Blustine, bassoonist Jennifer Rhodes, bassist Alvin Brehm, violist Valentina CharlapEvans and pianist blanca uribe. http://www.recordonline.com/archive/2003/05/13/jccowan.htm
Extractions: Everything was coming up roses Sunday afternoon at St. George's Church in Newburgh with a concert titled "A Bouquet of Quintets for Mother's Day." Sponsored by Newburgh Chamber Music, the program brought together a highly talented group of musicians who played in various combinations of quintets and duets. Their ensemble skills and lively interpretations proved to be truly remarkable. Founders of the series, violinist Carole Cowan and oboist Philip West, were joined by hornist Jerome Ashby, clarinetist Allen Blustine, bassoonist Jennifer Rhodes, bassist Alvin Brehm, violist Valentina Charlap-Evans and pianist Blanca Uribe. The musicians come from various venues; Ashby, for example, is with the New York Philharmonic and Blustine with Speculum Musicae. Others have been heard with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and other area music groups. You would not have guessed it, but this was the first time they played together as an ensemble. Michael Haydn, younger brother of the great Joseph Haydn, wrote his Divertimento in 1774 for violin, viola, bass, oboe and bassoon. The attack and timing of the instrumentalists were impeccable from the lilting four-note repeated theme of the first allegro sonata movement through the engaging adagio and rhythmic minuet and the final racing, tuneful allegro. Shifts of tempo and tone danced in the bright exchanges between strings and woodwinds.

Extractions: Richard Wilson Worklist Discography Essay ... Review Richard Wilson "[The opera] Aethelred the Unready turns out to be a work of whimsy and even an occasional belly laugh, tyhough there are also genuinely touching moments in it to remind us of the eternal human need for self-esteem.... joyuously recommended." Barry L. Cohen, New Music Conneoisseur, on Albany CD TROY 512. "...[L]yricism is given freer reign in Mr. Wilson' s Piano Trio (2002), a world premiere. This is a passionate work with tendrils that extend toward Debussy and Messiaen, particularly in extended tandem passages for the cello and violin. Striking, too, are the rhythmic vitality of this trio and the tightness of the interplay between the three instruments." Allan Kozinn, The New York Times Recent and upcoming events Wilson is the recipient of a 2004 âAcademy Awardâ of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The award honors outstanding artistic achievement and acknowledges a composer who has arrived at his or her own voice. Half of the total award of $15,000 will go toward a recording. Release of String Quartets 3 and 4 on Albany Records. Fanfare writes: "The music is dark and compelling in the manner of Bart³k and Berg, and, if there were more justice in the world, would find widespread exposure in the string quartet repertoire."

University of Maryland College Park, 1995 (UMI#9622179) This important source of career-oriented biographical material is available from UMI's Dissertations Express . The actual dissertation draws interesting comparisons and statistics from the interviews of professional pianists, but I think that the most valuable section is the Appendix which contains the interviews themselves. Only two or three of these artists have previosly published interviews or biographies, making this an invaluable insight into not just individual careers, but also the overall world of the woman as professional pianist, both historically and more recently. The interviews took place in the early 1990's and the women interviewed are: Lydia Artymiw

Extractions: MARIE FENG, twelve years old from the USA is a current student of Julia Amada Kruger in Austin, Texas. Although a well-planned and studied performance was given of the Nocturne, Op. 27, No. 2 of Chopin, it seemed to lack a rhythmic fluidity and sense of magic that a more imaginative approach might have produced. The Bach Fantasia, BWV 906 had precision and dynamic contrasts while the Chopin Scherzo in b flat minor did not seem ready for performance in terms of tempo, articulate clarity and pedaling. CHLOE CHRISTIAN PANG, also twelve years old and from the USA is a current student of James Arthur Gardner in California.
