Extractions: As is characteristic of Tureck's Bach, she combines technique with, expression in a way that makes one barely aware of the physicality of her playing. Her range of articulation is something to marvel at and her judicious use of both pedals enables a range of timbre and colour that brings the music to life. Indeed, the truth of Tureck's playing transcends her choice of instrument. Gramophone, 2003 Too often the groves of academe and the world of performance are mutually unsympathetic rather than complementary, but with the great scholar-pianist Rosalyn Tureck they are both championed and reconciled in a fruitful interaction of active and contemplative attitude and abilities. Juilliard | The Juilliard Journal Online Vol. XIX No. 1 September 2003. rosalyn tureck, 88, pianist and Bach Scholar pianist and harpsichordist rosalyn tureck, who played http://www.juilliard.edu/update/journal/j_articles26.html
Extractions: September 2003 Rosalyn Tureck, 88, Pianist and Bach Scholar Pianist and harpsichordist Rosalyn Tureck, who played an important role in the revival of interest in the music of J. S. Bach, died on July 17 in Riverdale, N.Y. at the age of 88. Born in Chicago in 1914, Tureck moved to New York at 16 to study at Juilliard with Olga Samaroff and graduated in 1935 with distinction. She was a member of Juilliard's piano faculty from 1945 to 1955, and later returned to the School for a number of master classes over the years (including several on Bach transcription for guitar). Tureck became interested in the piano at age 4, discovering she had perfect pitch and could imitate what she heard her older sister play. Her early teachers were the Russian Sophia Brilliant-Liven (who had been a teaching assistant to Anton Rubinstein) and Jan Chiapusso, a Dutch-Italian pianist born in Java who introduced Tureck to the sounds of Indonesian, Asian, and African instruments long before "world music" was popular. By the time she arrived at Juilliard, Tureck already intended to focus on the music of Bach. A series of six all-Bach concerts that she presented at Town Hall in 1937, two years after her graduation, was daring in the days that the composer's music was widely considered to be didactic exercises rather than concert fare. (Her first public performance, however, had actually been on the theremin.) In the late 1950s she ceased her other activitiesâwhich had included premiering works written for her and championing new music through Composers of Today, an organization she foundedâto move to London, where she formed the Tureck Bach Players and the International Bach Society, a forum for musicologists and performers. (Her later Tureck Bach Institute, founded in 1981, had a similar mission.) She returned to New York in 1977 for a time before heading back to England in the 1980s. At the time of her death, she had only lived in New York since 2001.

Edgar Roberts Born in Sulfur Springs, Okla., Mr. Roberts was raised in Texas. He got an early start in his piano career at age 3, when he would sidle up to his Aunt Willette (the accompanist at the silent movies hosted in his father's theaters in Memphis, Tex.) and play "by ear" while she worked the pedals. He began formal study at 7 and entered the Fort Worth Conservatory in 1933. At 15 he hosted his own solo piano program on the Texas State Network and on radio station WFAA-WBAP in Dallas and Fort Worth. Two years later, he won the prestigious Dealey Award, sponsored by the Dallas Morning News, which brought performances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Dubbed "the flaxen-haired virtuoso," he was even called to step in for another pianist on 12-hours' notice for a performance of The Firebird , under the baton of Stravinsky himself.
Young Rosalyn Tureck's Goldberg Variations Donald Satz wrote If she (rosalyn tureck) isn t tureck does no such thing Whether it s the Philips or DG recording, I hear a superb pianist who digs into Bach http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NonVocal/Klavier-Goldberg-Tureck.htm
Extractions: Four Duets, BWV 802-805 Rosalyn Tureck (piano) Philips 2-CD / TT: 2:35:45 Donald Satz wrote (September 2, 1999): I posted about two months ago on Tureck's new DG recording of the Goldberg Variations. I found them superbly played: total command, full identification with the idiom, fantastic part playing, and a dry sound which suits the performances perfectly. Most impressive, Tureck extensively used staccato, but I heard no choppiness or fragmentation of line - just a coherent whole and a "flow" to kill for. If she isn't the "high priestess" of Bach keyboard playing, nobody is. Now, Philips, as part of its Great Pianists series offers us Tureck's late 1950's account of the Goldbergs recorded in England. In addition, she plays the French Overture, Italian Concerto, and the Four Duets. Does 40 years make a big difference? Not in this case. The older performance is less austere and more poetic and nuanced. The newer recording is more commanding, mature, and provides better sound. But, it's still Tureck and the differences are not profound. So, I find myself in a bit of a quandry. I'm very glad to have both versions, but I think that many listeners would consider having both to be superfluous.
Goldberg Variations BWV 988 - Played By Rosalyn Tureck recording on harpsichord it sounds like a very good pianist bewildered by 14, 2004) To Bob Henderson I will always remember rosalyn tureck s Carnegie Hall http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NVD/BWV988-Tureck.htm
Extractions: I should have stated it thus: I prefer hearing a performance that sounds like play, not like a meticulously-edited structure. Obviously Tureck was in complete control of every note, and exactly the place she wanted to put them all: but in listening to it, I get the feeling that she over-thought it. I miss the spontaneity, and the whole side of rhythmic flexibility: her performance didn't allow *anything* irrational to creep into the structure, and I feel that such straitjacketing of the notes is a fatal musical flaw. IMO such a hyper-rational delivery makes Bach seem too one-sided: as Pablo Casals famously scoffed against opponents, "Bach the professor! who knew very well his counterpoint and his fugue and nothing else!" I like to hear the music singing and speaking more freely, and therefore I find it difficult to listen through Tureck's measured symmetries. (To "Schiff" it: it's a case where I can't listen for more than 20 minutes or so, hands on heart, while I have no trouble listening to his as the flow is so much more believable.)

Rich Rosenwald said: The 84-year old Rosalyn Tureck is AMAZING in this. Not only can you her her magnificent playing, but you can also watch it with the score on CD-Rom computer systems. This uses the latest technology DG has implemented in a select few of their recordings. This is the latest release using the 'CD Plusscore' system. It is a must for both fans of bach and ones who have interest in music on the computer at the same time. Perfect addition to anyone missing the Goldberg Variations in their Bach collection (like me). This CD should be availiable in March 1999 according to PolyGram, but I got a copy from overseas really cheap due to the fact that it was a new release in February 1999.
