Extractions: Though technically brilliant, Tselyakov's performance lacked radiance. Tselyakov was at his best with the Chopin selections and Rachmaninoff's Sonata No. 2, Op. 36. These compositions had memorable individual character, profoundly beautiful in their meditative and expressive qualities. The Barcarole, Op. 60 has preciously little to do with Venetian gondoliers, but instead displayed Tselyakov's control of tone and sonority, sustained notes and silence; the "Revolutionary" Etude, Op. 10, No. 12 revealed Tselyakov's leaning toward the song-like line and simple statement; after the subdued Nocturne, Op. 27, No. 1, the audience withheld applause, so delicate was the mood evoked; and the catchy Scherzo, Op. 31 elicited an almost inhuman kind of virtuoso prestidigitation from Tselyakov. His three prepared encores were in a similarly poetic vein: short musical pieces of distinct character and often impressionistic intensity. (The popular vote for Best Encore, perhaps even Highlight of the Evening, probably goes to Chopin's Prelude in G Major.) Rachmaninoff's Sonata No. 2, op. 36 like his other sonatas and concerti, presents a challenge many pianists face with sweating hands and racing pulses. Tselyakov's considerable talent met the demand of the difficult, but rewarding music. Unlike the Chopin selections, the Sonata is more dense, its harmony more shifting and its melodic lines written more subtly into the harmonic structure. The obvious focal point of the evening's program, Tselyakov closed with an excellently prepared and finely executed rendition of this piece. His down-to-business approach unleashed the dynamic of the music, its straining thematic development and gradual evolution. The ensuing applause was generous and vigorous, not least of all for Rachmaninoff (one of this century's considerably underrated composers).
