The work is a rareity in the concert hall, mainly because most pianists have shied away from its finger-twisting intensity. But this rareity has become a specialty of Thibaudet, as the Rocky Mountain News reported, "The powerful French pianist seemed unfazed by the work's thunderous double octaves, lightning-quick scales and arpeggios and other neverending demands."

His poetically strong interpretations, along with his extensive vocabulary of luminous colors and passionate sound, referred to as the "Thibaudet style," have helped him to forge a career in both the performance and recording arenas. He has performed with many of the world's foremost conductors and orchestras, collaborated with many of the pre-eminent singers of today and is a popular figure at the international music festivals. Thibaudet's 2002 summer season was rich in festival appearances, including Austria's Salzburg Festival, opening night at Spain's Granada Festival, Germany's Klavier Festival Ruhr and Kissinger Sommers Festival, Italy's Spoleto, Switzerland's Verbier, a televised performance at England's BBC Promenade Concerts, and at the United States' Tanglewood and Saratoga with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Other performance highlights included a tour of England with the Philharmonia Orchestra; recitals at two of Europe's well-known Chopin Festivals, and a concert with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in Baden-Baden, Germany. The Magic of Satie , a collection of both well-known and rare Satie works, including several pieces that are considered to be new discoveries. Recent recordings include a CD of the Mendelssohn Piano Concerti with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Herbert Blomstedt conducting, and a collection of arias entitled

Extractions: This all started with a "Consumer Guide" I wrote for the Village Voice, New York's big alternative weekly. I listened to 17 recordings of this suddenly popular concerto, and wrote 17 quick paragraphs, with a grade attached to each one. Poor David Helfgott got an F; Vladimir Horowitz got an A, for his version with Fritz Reiner conducting. (Though a later Horowitz release, a live performance with Eugene Ormandy, only got C+.) You can read this adventure, right here on this site. Much later and by a happy coincidence I was asked to write about the concerto once again, this time for the Los Angeles Times. In fact, I was asked to defend it against critical attacks, which I was happy to do. The more I listened to it, for my Voice consumer guide, the more I loved it. And I enlisted two very articulate pianists to help me defend it Alexander Toradze, and Byron Janis. This piece, too, is available here But you want to hear the music my comparisons of six pianists playing the same Rach 3 excerpt. Extractions: Jean-Yves Thibaudet is not a pianist to be pigeonholed. Alongside the recordings of his fellow countrymen Debussy and Ravel, he has recorded a tribute to a jazz giant, Conversations with Bill Evans , and he plays on the soundtrack of the film Portrait of a Lady . Perhaps this catholic approach accounts for the freshness of his Debussy playing. Not for him the "stick the pedal down and make an impressionistic wash of sound" approach. His playing is clean and refreshing without losing any of the voluptuous sensuality of Debussy at his most beguiling. There are lollipops to be found among the extensive repertory on these two discs, including the celebrated "Clair de Lune" from the Suite Bergamasque and the "Golliwogg's Cake-Walk" from Children's Corner . The mainstay of the release is the two sets of Images and the two books of , 12 studies whose demands are not for the faint of heart. Luckily for us, Thibaudet's heart is strong. He offers virtuosic, thoughtful performances of pieces that, while written to help develop pianists' technique, stand up magnificently as music to be listened to.
