Extractions: With a weekend of weather that only reinforced how unfriendly Eastern Canada's spring had been, the 19th annual Festival International Musique Actuelle, May 16-20, provided a wealth of indoor activities. Indeed, Artistic Director Michel Levasseur set a program that's best kept inside; nearly every act generated an instant series of debatesin the coffee shops or in the lounge of a motel which housed nearly the entire audience that descended on this small Quebec town. Musique Actuelle, of course, is still the motivating philosophy here. Translated literally as "current," musique actuelle doesn't just blur musical distinctionsit flattens them entirely. All possible permutations of improvised music are welcome. Cultural boundaries are banished. The novel nearly always trumps the tried-and-true. This, inevitably, leads to a surprise or twoand a fair share of successes and failures, as well. This year proved no different. The festival focused on duos (nine of the 24 shows) and a pair of special events: English pianist Keith Tippett's 21-piece orchestra, Tapestry, and a performance by trumpeter Bill Dixon, drummer Tony Oxley and Cecil Taylor. The variety of characters and configurations of the duets presented enormous possibilities. Some pairs were meeting for the first time; others renewing a long-time acquaintance. But, overall, the results were often disappointing. In some cases, exhibitionism triumphed over genuine invention. And more than occasionally, a lack of empathy existed between the players.

Extractions: Improvised Music from Japan / Kyoko Kuroda Pianist Kyoko Kuroda was born November 20, 1957 in Tokyo, Japan. She started playing piano as a young child, and studied with a classical music teacher until she was 17. While at university, she became fascinated by Noh (a type of traditional Japanese theater) and became involved in playing Noh music, an experience which continues to influence her music today. Kuroda began playing jazz in 1982, studying for two years with pianist Aki Takase. In 1984 she began playing in public venues, and performed with bassist Yoshio Ikeda throughout 1985. In January of '86 she formed her quartet BAHR with alto sax player Atsushi Ikeda, bassist Shinichi Kato and drummer Masayuki Kume. The group, led by Kuroda, remained together for about a year and a half, playing mainly her original tunes at jazz clubs such as Shinjuku Pit Inn. From autumn 1987 to winter 1990, Kuroda directed a workshop called ORT. The participants were musicians such as Atsushi Ikeda, tenor sax and flute player Makoto Oka, trombonist Yoichi Murata and turntable and guitar player Yoshihide Otomo, as well as several theater actresses. The purpose of the workshop was to develop music which transcends genres, and open up the possibilities of musical activity. (ORT's live performance of 1988 was released as a cassette tape called ORT , and its 1990 studio recording was included in an omnibus CD, Now's the Time Workshop, Vol. 1
