Extractions: Running a festival with a focus on the cutting edge gets to be risky business, especially if said festival survives beyond its youthful stages. This lesson has been learned, in ways both hard and logical, by the dense springtime foray known as Festival International Musique Actuelle, aka FIMAV, or Victo. By whatever name, the festival is something special, and evolving. Now on the cusp of next year's 20th anniversary, FIMAV celebrates its status as one of the most unique avant-garde fests in the Americas, falling in some netherzone between the jazz left, the rock fringes, electronica, and contemporary "art music." And all of this in a modest-sized town in Quebec's Bois Francs region, amidst rolling hills dotted with dairy farms. Two hours outside of Montreal, Victoriaville is just close enough to a thriving urban scene to tap into its audience and artist base, and just far enough away to be a cultural entity of its volition and design.

Extractions: My Marilyn (Enja) Laulud Marilyn Monroe filmidest ja plaatidelt shveitsi saksofonisti David Kleini grupilt, mille ridadesse kuulub ka pianist Mulgrew Miller. Laulab Davidi ema Miriam, kelle hääl jääb kuhugi Billie Holiday ja Marianne Faithfulli vahepeale. Lõõgas, õhuline ja eilse glamuuri poole küünitav õhustik. See plaat on hitt. Muusika ulatub mediteerivast India ainestikust kuni abstraktse rockilikult aktiivse improvisatsioonini. Robert Dicki mängu tasub gurmaanidel kuulata eriti tähelepanelikult. Huong Thanh

Extractions: Julia Hülsmann is a most remarkable pianist on the contemporary German jazz scene. She has absorbed the tradition and now plays with the building blocks of the music. "She doesn't just haphazardly throw styles together, like so many players her age. Instead, she remains respectful of the foundation - the melody", wrote DIE WELT, one of Germanys most influential newspapers. With unerring taste, the pianist combines the most diverse influences: the impressionism of a Ravel, pop music from Sting, the jazz piano tradition from Monk to Hancock and beyond. Born in Bonn in 1968, Hüsmann studied at the Berlin College of the Arts under such masters as Walter Norris, Aki Takase, and David Friedman, and in New York with Maria Schneider, Richie Beirach, Gil Goldstein, and Jane Ira Bloom. She was a member of Germany's renowned National Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer, and made a name for herself as keyboard player in diverse big bands, fusion formations, and pop groups. Her trio, which she formed in 1997, is considered by jazz enthusiasts to be one of the most subtle and distinctive bands in the German capital. For "Scattering Poems" Julia was able to acquire the talents of bassist Marc Muellbauer along with drummer Heinrich Köbberling.

Maria Joao In the same year she was discovered by freejazz pianist aki takase who invitedher to sing with her. Their musical relationship lasted five years. http://www.atlanticwaves.org.uk/2001/Maria_Joao.htm
Extractions: Carlos Barretto + Mário Delgado + José Salgueiro MARIA JOO Maria João Monteiro Grancha was born in 1956, in Lisbon. Whilst growing up, Maria never thought about becoming a singer. In her teenage years she used to practice Aikido and she swam a lot in order to get rid of some of the overwhelming energy she possessed. Her passion for sports began at age 17, when she had already been expelled from 5 different schools. Her love for sports gave her a black belt at Aikido and she also becomes a swimming teacher. Aged 27, when she was training to be a lifeguard, she realised that she had the potential to become a professional singer. When the gymnasium where she worked as a swimming teacher closed, a friend suggested that she attend the Hot Club of Lisbon Jazz School. Maria João knew nothing about jazz but she decided to go to an audition at the Hot Club out of curiosity. Despite having no musical background, and no knowledge of written music, Maria João's audition was successful and from then on she began to learn how to sing.

Extractions: Broomriding Psi Inexplicably, it's been close to four years since Alexander Von Schlippenbach has had a release under his own name. This one, Broomriding is on Evan Parker's Psi label. An interesting thing about the label is, yet perhaps unsurprising, is that after 12 releases Psi has yet to have a perceivable aesthetic, aside from it being a new haven for many of Parker's past and present contemporaries. The Gerd Dudek and Kenny Wheeler records are decidedly soft in approach, along the lines of the comeliest ECM productions. Parker's own titles, each wonderful in its own right, are mostly exhumations of either solo soprano works or past performances with Paul Lytton and Barry Guy. And recently Parker produced Free Zone Appleby further interpreted to glorious realisation, especially in the case of Rudi Mahall, a rare case of a European reed player who can be identified by a single instrument (bass clarinet) and rightfully so. The occasion of Mahall's playing with Schlippenbach is as exciting as any other pairing-with-potential of recent memory. Their chemistry, with the inclusion of Paul Lovens, seals Broomriding as a disc with many colors of moxie, and it is my personal hope that this outfit becomes a working unit on some level or another.
