The Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (heard previously on albums on ECM and FMP) is one of the most adventurous and creative jazz ensembles in the world, led by two pillars of post-Monk, post-Cecil Taylor piano: Aki Takase (Enja recording artist) and Alexander von Schlippenbach, an astounding pianist and founder of the groundbreaking Globe Unity Orchestra. In this recording of a 1996 concert in Tokyo, the 18-piece big band includes long-time Schlippenbach cohorts Evan Parker and Paul Lovens, and trombonist Paul Rutherford, all giants of European free jazz. In addition to breath-taking improvisations and original compositions by Schlippenbach and Takase, the concert features an Eric Dolphy medley (arranged by Takase) and a couple of surprises W.C. Handy's "Way Down South" (arranged by Schlippenbach) and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" (Benny Goodman's closing theme, here arranged by Willem Breuker).

Extractions: Larry Porters Berlin Trio plays original compositions of exceptional harmonic beauty with an openness that allows for a maximum of interplay. These three musicians strive to exploit the essence of the triangle where each point is connected to the others. Whether exploring sublime ballads or dancing through sophisticated altered blues, the trio sustains a crystalline tension, creates an entire spectrum of atmospheres, and pushes the boundaries of traditional jazz form. listen to a sample: The Circle Is Unbroken (Larry Porter) LARRY PORTER - piano JOHANNES FINK - bass Born February 28, 1964 in Erlangen, Germany into a musical family; his father is a jazz pianist. Aki Takase And Rudi Mahall - The Dessert - CD Review Previous collaborations between pianist aki takase and bass clarinetist Rudi Mahallhave resulted in clever recapitulations of WC Handy and Eric Dolphy tunes. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/reviews/r0703_137.htm
Extractions: Previous collaborations between pianist Aki Takase and bass clarinetist Rudi Mahall have resulted in clever recapitulations of W. C. Handy and Eric Dolphy tunes. The Dessert allows both artists the freedom of a completely self-penned CD to present 17 pieces that emphasize their delectable dynamics. On the sweetest slices, piano and bass clarinet blend to create music that straddles the line between unstructured creativity and prescribed composition. The resultant musical aperitifs, while symbolizing oral delicacies, tickle the aural palate as well. The Dessert is an adventurously caloric addition to any musical diet.
