Extractions: By the time she was seventeen, it was clear that Clélia needed to spread her wings and her parents decided that she should study abroad. She won a scholarship to London to study with the highly reputed, Maria Curcio, who was a former pupil of the pianist great, Arthur Schnabel. Clélia also studied with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music who encouraged Clélia to play new repertoire, whilst trying to "tame a little bit of her wild Latin American spirit". It was during these years that Clélia worked on her chamber music playing, studying harmony, counterpoint and conducting and she won several prizes including the coveted Recital Diploma. It was also when she met her future husband, Renato, who was also studying piano there. However, probably the greatest teacher of all was Mercês de Silva Telles, a Brazilian piano teacher who studied with Claudio Arrrau who she met after winning the Santander competition in 1987. Other awards have included winning top prizes at the Tunbridge Wells Piano Competition in Kent, the Paloma O'Shea Award in Santander and Pilar Bayona in Zaragoza. Although she returns home to Brazil two or three times a year, Clélia has made London her home. She married Renato in 1989 and although he no longer professionally plays piano, they often play duets together at various local concerts. Nowadays, more of his time is spent with their two children Raphael (8 years old) and Maria Clara (6 years old) watching their mother perform professionally throughout the U.K., including her recitals and concerto performances at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John's Smith Square and major music societies throughout the country. Overseas, Clélia has played concerts tours and recitals in Brazil, Argentina, Canada, France, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Venezuela, the former Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic and USA. In between such engagements, Clélia also regularly appears in radio and television broadcasts in several countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, France, Spain and the U.K. Recent engagements include a recital at the Wigmore Hall where she played the "world premiere" of Marlos Nobre's Sonata Breve, a tour in Sweden with the Vasteras Sinfonietta, the UK, a tour in Norway with the Kristiansand Chamber Orchestra, Portugal and in Brazil recitals and concerts with the Orquestra Petrobras Pro-Musica and Orquestra Sinfonica da Bahia. Over the past few years, Clélia's unique mastery had been captured on disc. Her first CD with music by Villa-Lobos released by Meridian Records was received to great critical acclaim and has been broadcast in many countries, including the BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM in the U.K. She has also released the recording of Latin American Dances with the Swedish label Intim Musik as well as a disc of Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No.1 and Concerto for Violin and Piano with Joachim Gustafsson, which was released in December '99 and was chosen by Swedish Radio as the best recording of the Double Concerto in comparison with any other recordings of this work. Her new CD "The Waltz Album" has been well received by the critic and public alike. She will release another CD dedicated to Brazilian Piano Concertos with Lontano and Odaline de la Martinez on the Lorelt label in the New Year. In the seventy years of its existence, the competition has evolved and transformed itself, altered and improved its form, and created its own extensive tradition. The initiator of the Frederick Chopin Piano Competition was Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew (1887-1980), an outstanding Polish pianist, teacher and composer. The first Chopin Competition took place on 23-30 January 1927 in the concert hall of the Warsaw Philharmonic. The next Competitions in 1932 and 1937 were also held there, at a five year interval, in accordance with the rules of the organisers. The 1942 Competition was not held owing to the Second World War, and the Competition could not be continued until several years after the war. The first postwar and the fourth International Frederick Chopin Competition took place in 1949, in the "Roma" concert hall, which is still standing in Nowogrodzka Str., the temporary home of the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Opera. The Competition became the culmination of the Chopin Year, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the death of this great composer. The next Competition was organised six years later, in 1955. This change to the traditional five year-cycle was caused by the reconstruction of the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, which was promoted soon afterwards to the rank of a national institution. From 1955 onwards, the Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition has been held in the National Philharmonic Hall every five years without a break.

Extractions: Previous Random bridge March 07, Barenboim versus Pires Yesterday morning on Radio 3's CD Review, Evgeny Kissin was talking about playing Bach. Did he plan to record any? His answer included references to others who were doing it so well that he hesitated. Murray Perahia and Andras Schiff were not surprises, but I was intrigued that he mentioned Daniel Barenboim's live Goldberg Variations , which I possess. I have it on now, and at its quite frequent best I am liking it hugely. Listening to Barenboim's playing provoked me into thinking what is so special about his playing (when it is special) and what is so unsatisfactory about it (when it is unsatisfactory). And I think I have it. Barenboim as a pianist is still a conductor, and he always was a conductor from the very start of his life as a musician. The only difference is that when playing the piano he is his own orchestra. But Barenboim the interpreter is quite separate from Barenboim the pianist. Barenboim the interpeter stands outside, and watches and conducts (which would be why he finds it no great strain also to be conducting an orchestra while playing the piano). For Barenboim, piano playing involves an out of body experience. The as-good-as-it-gets interpreter of music, Barenboim the interpreter, always wants Barenboim the pianist to do something very good and interesting, but all too often Barenboim the pianist doesn't quite bring it off, either because he may not be the world's greatest pianist (I don't know), or perhaps because he is too busy doing that conducting while he is playing, or perhaps because he is too busy, generally
