Schliessmann is widely regarded as one of the influential pianists of the modern era. He has received numerous prizes and awards for his interpretations, and has performed at major festivals and halls throughout Europe, Japan and North America. The German pianist studied at the Frankfurt College of Music and Arts receiving his diploma in 1987. While still in school, he began his very successful forays into recording and performance. His second album, a compilation of Brahms' works, won a Grammy award. He has recorded the complete Brahms piano works for the Bayer label. Extractions: Burkard Schliessmann Talks with Robert J. Sullivan, Jr. G erman pianist Burkard Schliessmann studied at the Frankfurt College of Music and Arts, receiving his diploma in 1987. While still in school, he began his very successful forays into recording and performance. His first record, intended only as a demo-tape for the Washington Music Festival, received the 1988 Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik . A second album of Brahms won a Grammy Award. Today he is in the midst of recording the complete Brahms piano works for Bayer Records. Schliessmann's approach to the piano, though guided by a piercing intellect, remains essentially intuitive. His emotionally expressive style can be heard in music from Beethoven to Scriabin to Busoni. Sullivan: Who are your favorite pianists, past and present? Schliessmann: My "favorite pianists" - as you call them - are Schnabel, Solomon, Cortot and Serkin. These are the ones I consider historic. Of those still playing, Michelangeli for me is the greatest of all. I admire his astonishing intellect, the electricity, concentration and maturity of his singular, serious and highly personal interpretations and, last and not least, his huge technique, which indeed is something for connoisseurs. His beautiful, sonorous and controlled tone and sound is a mystery. You'd never find "affectation" in Michelangeli's playing. I admire Schnabel and Solomon for the stile parlando of their phenomenal Beethoven interpretations; Cortot for being a typical representative of the dawning 19th Century and Romantic period, showing us how Chopin should be understood; and Serkin, for demonstrating what depth music and interpretation finally can have.
Classical Net Review - Brahms - Piano Music burkard schliessmann, piano Antes Edition Classics BMCD 31.9010 next set of discsin schliessmann s Brahms traversal. as I have seen from the German pianist. http://www.classical.net/music/recs/reviews/a/aec19010a.html
Extractions: Antes Edition Classics BM-CD 31.9010 DDD Time: 56:25 Antes should announce soon the next set of discs in Schliessmann's Brahms traversal. This one is the latest, completing his look at the late piano music. The B-minor rhapsody, arriving in the middle of the program, breaks the calm like a maelstrom. It's the most impetuous I've heard; after the rather saccharine middle section (unsuccessful rubato), the return of the exposition is simply massive. This is as close to a "display" of virtuosity as I have seen from the German pianist. I'd like to see his chordal technique applied to Liszt's B-minor sonata. The second rhapsody is chunky Brahms. I've never been fond of this piece; Gould's bony rendition is a disaster. Schliessmann's tone makes it fairly palatable. The late works are all very good. Schliessmann captures the melancholy of Brahms' shifting modes, the flitting from light to shadow - the Op. 118 set is especially forlorn. More buoyant is the third intermezzo from Op. 119, whose dancing steps last all of a minute and a half. There was a smile somewhere under that beard! Robert J. Sullivan

I presume that he is trying to tell us something new, but he either doesnt know what he wants to say or, more likely, has nothing to say. Treating Chopins ballades as narrative pieces is a perfectly legitimate approach, but it is also the most difficult task any pianist can face. It requires not just a complete musical understanding of the work, but also an intellectual superiority and of course some kind of story that will keep his listeners excited. I couldnt hear any of those. BS is slow. Too slow. His pauses are not an expressive tool, they sound like misjudgements during the editing process. His tone is rough, his playing colourless and he is all but agile in the fast sections. As if hes playing with stiff fingers. But the most annoying feature of his pianism are the interruptions of musical flow. He inserts the pauses deliberately, cutting the phrase in the middle while applying his own dynamics (particularly bad in Ballades no.1 and 2). In the process he is creating something that is not Chopin Ive ever heard before. There is no musical unity here, just one episode after another. At least if he could be consistent in his butchering, some episodes are elaborately expansive, but most of the time he doesnt know what to do and just leaves the music as it is, without any meaning.
