His precocious musical telent was detected very quickly and he was tutored by his father under whose guidance he not only started to give recitals in Malta at several important venues and performing regularly on TV and radio, but also obtained his LRSM at just over 13 years of age, the youngest Maltese pianist so far to achieve this distinction. Subsequently he was granted a scholarship by the Soviet-Maltese Friendship Society, proceeding to the Tchaikovsky State Conservatoire in Kiev studying piano under Alexander Snegiriov and conducting under Roman Kofman, both distinguished professors and performers. Having graduated with an MA (Mus.) degree, he was recommended for post graduate studies under the distinguished Sergei Dorensky for piano and the world famous Gennadij Rozhdestvensky for conducting at the Tchaikowsky State Conservatoire in Moscow. During his student years, Schembri made regular appearances in some of the most important halls in the Soviet Union as solo pianist in recitals, concertos, chamber music ensembles, as well as symphonic concerts and opera. He also performed various concertos at the Manoel Theatre, gave recitals at the Phoenicia and conducted at the University auditorium, as well as at the Wigmore Hall London to critical acclaim. For a time he was musical director with the Choral Society, cofounder of the Opera Studio, conductor with the Kiev Opera Studio, lecturer at the department of music at the UM, member of the Mediterranean Institute of the Foundation for International Studies, and musical director with Teatru Strada Stretta (directed by his brother, Guiseppe Schembri). In 1988 he was awarded the Malta Cultural Award.

His frequent local appearances on TV, Radio and in most public concert halls gained him a remarkably popular reputation. After he became the youngest ever to obtain the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (London) he decided to dedicate his life to music and with this in mind he travelled to the former Soviet Union. During his studies at the Kiev and Moscow State Conservatories , he actively participated in the student concert life, both as pianist and conductor, winning first prize of the "Beethoven Concerto Competition". He obtained an M.A.(music) and did a post-graduate course in piano with Alexander SNEGIRIOV and Serguei DORENSKY and conducting with Roman KOFMAN and Gennady ROZHDESTVENSKY. This was followed by an intense period of activity as concert pianist, choir conductor at the Manoel Theatre in Malta, music director of the Malta Choral Society, founder and music director of the Malta Opera Studio, lecturer in the music department and member of the Mediterranean Institute at the University of Malta. Building upon his already remarkable conducting experiences both in his native Malta and abroad thanks to guest conducting appearances in various countries, he also gave numerous highly acclaimed piano recitals. Extractions: 05th June, 2004 PRESS COMMENTARIES The Times : 20th April, 2004 Tangibly promoting the arts As the date of Malta's entry in the EU looms nearer and the government announces dates and venues for the various festivities to celebrate this historic occasion, three welcome participants have further enhanced the varied fare on offer: namely Miriam Gauci, Brian Schembri and Joseph Calleja. These three marvellously gifted individuals certainly do Malta proud. They have all sacrificed the joy of settled family life to pursue and perfect an ideal and with plenty of hard work and sacrifice have reached the top echelons in their field. The stark reality of being a tiny island is that at present we are absolutely unable to sustain artists, in whatever genre, to actually make a living in Malta. If one really wishes to succeed one has perforce to emigrate or commute and establish oneself elsewhere in close proximity to great orchestras, top galleries, dynamic agencies and so on. Malta is far too cut off from the mainstream to enable one to be more than a dilettante and if one wishes to be professional with a capital P one has to start packing. Hopefully, once within the EU things will be made easier and our insularity will, in the long run, prove to be an asset and not the liability it is at present. Of the three, Ms Gauci, a wonderfully attractive soprano with a voice like gossamer, is the one whose presence we are most familiar with. For many years she was practically an exile and her performances in Malta very infrequent. Every time she sings it is a major event.

After joining Aleateia I realized that I had no scavenging work to do and transformed my previous hunting time into training sessions that gave me the possibility to create with a group of peopl, who happen to be my greatest friends.
