Extractions: Romantic Piano Music USF , Spring 2003 Course number: 0158-222-01 Professor: Alexandra Amati-Camperi Meets: Tue-Thu 1:15-3:00, LM 262 Course description The present course introduces the students to the music written by those 19th-century poets of the ivories such as Schubert, the two Schumanns, Chopin, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Mussorgsky, Liszt and others. We will consider the nature and the types of pieces composed, their emotional content and the enormous variety of shapes feelings and images can take. We will listen to romantic piano music and consider the issue of performing, performer then and now, and historical performance practice. Students will also consider the history and the evolution of the instrument and will attend public performances (and critique them). We will ask why did most romantic music take either the form of a song ( Lieder ) or the piano ëcorrespondentí form of miniature character piece (our straw mat will be some of the dozen of such miniatures Felix Mendelssohn composed and collectively named ìSongs without wordsî). Genres to be discussed include: prelude, mazurka, polonaise, nocturne, ballade, waltz, Ètude, capriccio, novelletta, impromptus, bagatelle, intermezzo, rhapsody, and others. Audition Dates HEADLINES School of Music heard round the world The Kent Camerata invited to present concerts and master classes in China Left to right: David DeBolt; Katharine DeBolt; Jan Meyer Thompson; Mary Sue Hyatt; Vickie Moffat The Kent Camerata, Kent State Universitys affiliated professional instrumental/vocal ensemble, was invited by the Chinese Peoples Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) to present concerts and master classes at the music conservatories of Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai, China, March 18-30, 2002. The tour was initiated in the spring of 2001 by Dr. Ray Heisey, emeritus director and emeritus professor of communication studies of Kent State University. Heisey put the Camerata in touch with the CPAFFC, one of many academic and professional contacts Heisey has through his research and teaching in intercultural communications. The general director, Wang Xiutian of the Department of Cultural Exchange for the Chinese CPAFFC, issued the invitation, sponsored the cultural exchange, and organized all of the concerts/master classes, visits to musical associations and sightseeing tours. Wang held a reception dinner for the ensemble upon their arrival in Beijing. Present at the dinner was Wing Ho, a Kent State School of Music graduate (1984), who now teaches in his homeland at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

The concert is (Wednesday) March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the School of Music's Katzin Concert Hall on the main ASU campus in Tempe. Admission is free, no tickets are required. He has taken part in numerous national and international piano competitions and has won a number of awards. Saracino is currently professor of piano at the Palermo State Conservatory of Music.
