Extractions: TIME was, when you wanted to splurge on a set of records, you bought the Beethoven symphonies, or the Chopin nocturnes, or even The Ring. You might have had 20 LPs in a big, glorious box. These days, if you have the urge (and the cash), you can come away with whole suitcases of CDs. Teldec, this season, is offering the complete works of Bach, in a project called Bach 2000-which unfolds on 153 discs. Philips, for its part, has produced Great Pianists of the 20th Century-on a clean 200 discs. Most gratifyingly, we have, from BMG, The Rubinstein Collection, on 94 discs, documenting the career of the pianist Arthur Rubinstein. There are worse ways to spend $1,500. Rarely has a record company produced something so exalting. In the recent Man of the Century business, we had no Pianist of the Century. But if we had named one, the winner would undoubtedly have been Rubinstein-and he would have received plenty of votes for Man, too. Rubinstein was idolized by millions, and he was most people's idea of a concert musician. His recordings have sold more than any other pianist's (which speaks well of the public taste). BMG's collection includes more than 700 of those recordings, all expertly remastered, and they amount to more than 100 hours of music. This is not merely quantity for quantity's sake, as with some of these monster sets, but the chronicle of a major life, as well as a large slice of musical history.

He was mainly known for his interpretations of Chopin and Beethoven and the 19th Century 'Great German Composers'. One of the surprising aspects of Rubinstein's life and career was his love of Spain and for Spanish Music. This Polish pianist who trained in Berlin first visited Spain in 1915 and thereafter he was a constant visitor and bought a house in Marbella. He became friends with Manuel de Falla and with the composer's blessing made a keyboard transcription of the "Ritual Fire Dance" from the ballet "El Amor Brujo". This is included on the disc. He took great pleasure in being told that he played "like a born Spaniard". All the recordings are in mono and some taken from 78s but RCA is to be congratulated on the quality of digital re-mastering. In no case does the recording of the piano distract from the music, in fact most sound as if they were made yesterday. The sound of the orchestra in "Nights in the Gardens of Spain" is good for its age.

But there will be no discussion at all that Arthur Rubinstein will be among the 5-10 to be mentioned. Rubinstein (1887-1982) was the romantic who enjoyed life: 'I am the happiest man I ever have met' . Standing with one foot in last century he was born in Poland, studied in Germany and lived in the US. Chopin was his favourite composer. But all romantic music was on his repertoire - even Grieg who he made some memorable recordings of. This CD presents his playing of Chopin, recorded in the respectable age of 70. We hear the second piano sonate - the one with the funeral march - and the big polonaises in A and A flat. Kjell Moe

Extractions: Until about three years ago, Arthur Rubinstein was only a name to me. I knew him through only a couple recordings of the music of Chopin, but otherwise I always drew a complete blank as to what exactly it was that he did. Then I found this two CD set of the complete Chopin nocturnes at a local music store and I was completely blown away. Not just by the playing itself which is immaculate and warm, but by the works themselves. Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) was born in Poland and studied in Berlin under Heinrich Barth, a friend of Brahms and one of the foremost piano teachers of his day. As a pianist, Rubinstein excelled in the classical repertoire from the music of Bach to Chopin and beyond. During his later years, he befriended such great composers as Stravinsky, the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos and the Spaniard Manuel de Falla. All of these contemporary composers wrote works for Rubinstein; some of these works are still performed to this day.

Extractions: Nocturnes Op.62 and the second from Op.55). Mozart was a favourite, Beethoven less so. His attitude towards his contemporaries was ambiguous at best. He was cool towards Schumann, never reciprocating the latters enthusiasm for his own music. And his admiration for Liszt was tinged with jealousy. But perhaps the most important aspects of his personality were his insecurity and his indecisiveness (many letters to his parents in which he expresses his hesitation between going back to Poland to fight alongside his countrymen or staying in his new adopted home attest to this trait). This "folie du doute," his inability to make up his mind, actually permeates many of his works and is even reflected in his harmonic language, making him by far one of the most original harmonists of his time.
